For me, there is something about a "color" shot which has no color in
it which I find appealing... the "natural black & white shot" or
something. I don't know why.

Is this a color shot which just doesn't happen to have much color in

Re: On the Verandah

2008-03-22 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks for the comments, everyone!

This was not an easy shot. On the other side of the
ballusters it was a bright, bright sunny day; any bit
of background leaking through became a blown-out
highlight. That greatly constrained my choice of
focal lengths.

I tried various crops but liked this one the best. I
might try a crop where the square vertical post is,
though...

cheers,

Rick

RE: On the Verandah

2008-03-22 Thread Bob W
That's interesting. The way the light and shadow work against the
curves makes it look like a solarisation or Sabatier effect (is that
the right word) and consequently reminds me of Man Ray, rather
unusually.

Some have mentioned cropping the lower LH corner. My vote is actually for
the *upper* LH corner to get the axe. Nice photo either way.

I like it, but I'm not really sure why. And, irony of ironies, the ad

Re: On the Verandah

2008-03-21 Thread Brian Walters
Very simple and effective. I like the subtle light and shadow.

As Dave mentioned, the lower left detracts a bit - cropping just past the
vertical post might improve it but I like it pretty much the way it is.

Thinking about my comment I take that back, however I think I would have
taken it from a slightly different angle so that the group of balusters
closest to the camera would fill the frame.

On the Verandah

2008-03-21 Thread Rick Womer
On the verandah of Magnolia Plantation, outside
Charleston:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7083024&size=lg

K10D, DA 50-200, ISO 400, f/11 @ 1/30, RAW via DNG
converter and PE4.

Wobbly internet connections and a crowded schedule
these days, so I've not been around as much as I would
like.

OTOH, I made my 5000th exposure on the K10D this
afternoon. Not bad for 10 1/2 months.
