Hi Paul, I meant: if the light source, e.g. the sun, is not part of the composition but just outside of the picture area. And this happens quite often, at least for me. With the sun in ones back there will be no flare. :-) But already with the sun at 90 degrees it's a problem. A hood would be an improvement, but it's not an IF lens, so the front part rotates. Bob, if you like the 24mm length like I do it was one of my favorite lens until it stopped zooming. It is very sharp at 24mm but with some vignetting at the wider apertures. Sharpness falls at 70mm but it's still contrasty. A great walking-around lens.
