PAW - Gebbies Pass

2006-03-21 Thread David Mann
I was uploading another batch of photos and decided on a whim to make
this one (which I uploaded last week) a PAW.

http://www.bluemoon.net.nz/photo/printsdb/view.php?p=322t=1

This photo seems to be very dependent on the monitor and viewing
conditions. The foreground is meant to be reasonably dark.

I may as well show the accompanying view north towards Lyttelton
Harbour, the shipping port of Christchurch city which they
conveniently put on the other side of the hills. I remember reading
somewhere that the settlers considered building the city around this
harbour, but somebody sensible decided that building on the plain
would be a better idea.

http://www.bluemoon.net.nz/photo/printsdb/view.php?p=321

Lyttelton is actually a flooded volcano which is supposedly
extinct... there's a good overhead view of the peninsula here which
shows what's left of both the Lyttelton and Akaroa volcanoes.

Beautiful

Dave you should get a job with the NZ Tourism Board.

Every time I see your pictures it makes me wish I could get the time
off work to go there for a holiday.

Hi David
an interesting description and nice photos. I do prefer the harbour photo,
It's blue looks more friendly for my mood today :-) And again, size matters
here too..
greetings

A pleasant photo, but certainly suffers from too much sky. The
foreground seems as you desired it.

2006-03-21 Thread Tom C
My first thoughts were that it might be better cropped more as a panorama.
OTOH, what part would one do away with? If one halved the amount of sky,
then the patches of clear blue on the left, that are above (and tend to
complement) the brightest spots of sun on the left hillside would be lost.
As I scroll/crop, I find the picture is less dynamic with less sky and goes
flat without it.

Of course it's personal preference.

I think that is why I called it a 'pleasant' image rather than
'amazing' - it doesn't bowl you over, but it is nice to look at.

You may be right that cropping hurts it, but there is still too much
sky.
