I think it's more the subject matter than anything else. B&W just gives it all an air of mystery. Maybe it's evocative of another time or something. I now know from the colour version that what I thought was a plain between the foreground and the mountains is water. cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson

Joe, You're my man! I am, and always have been, drawn to old, worn, damaged, decrepit objects and scenes. There's something within me that draws me to them. One of my fantasies is to live in a small, old house that's badly in need of paint out in some rural area, and drive a 1960 Dodge PowerWagon pickup into town to get groceries Now that the brakes are repaired on my 20 year old sedan, it's about time to go back to the marina ;-)) Shel > [Original Message] > From: Joseph Tainter > I am a sucker for ruin and desolation. I am a sucker for ruin and desolation. (What do you expect? I'm an archaeologist.) So I enjoyed the chair and the houseboat very much, Shel. The latter was much better in grayscale. A foggy or rainy day would have improved it even more. A rotting beached whale would have been icing on the cake. I might have been tempted to crop off about half of the sky. To my eye it doesn't add. Joe

Actually, the location was by the bay, not the sea ;-)) therefore your opinion doesn't count Shel > [Original Message] > From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > See Shel, I'm not the only one who got this from your colour version. > > Clever pun I accidently made there, See Shel by the sea side.
Re: PAW PESO - Sunken Houseboat (Link to Color Version)
While I don't think the B&W version is that great, the color in this shot really annoys me. There's just something about it that's disharmonious and jarring to my sensibilities. However, I'm pleased that some seem to like it ;-)) I find the B&W much more moody and evocative. No accounting for our preferences, eh Rick. It's nice that you like it as it gives me thought to try to make something better of it. Thanks! I like the color version a lot more, too. Hmmm ... the color just doesn't grab me that much, at least in this rendition, although it does look better surrounded in black and "framed" as compared to the grey background with no frame in Photoshop. I'll be going back at some point and see what other possibilities there are at the old marina. Thanks for your thoughtful comments. However, it appears that might be impossible unless you find a much higher camera position. In any case, I like the shot. The color lends a sense of peace and tranquility that's missing in the BW. It would probably be even nicer with the ball going down, although you might need a tripod. > Paul > > > > Hi Paul, > > > > Here's the original color shot: > > > > http://home.earthlink.net/~my-pics/houseboat-color.html
Re: PAW PESO - Sunken Houseboat (Link to Color Version)
I find the color version more interesting, although it leaves me wishing you could find an angle where the waterbreak didn't intersect the boat. However, it appears that might be impossible unless you find a much higher camera position. In any case, I like the shot. The color lends a sense of peace and tranquility that's missing in the BW. It would probably be even nicer with the ball going down, although you might need a tripod. Re: PAW PESO - Sunken Houseboat (Link to Color Version)
Hi Paul, Here's the original color shot: http://home.earthlink.net/~my-pics/houseboat-color.html I think it's obvious that the color didn't quite work here - different light, different film, a different lens may have made it work better, or, of course, it could have been adjusted in PS. The plug-in from The Imaging Factory has some very nice features, however, I wouldn't want to have that as the only source for B&W conversion. There are so many other options, but, AFAIC, it's a definite keeper and well worth the download and free trial. Buying it is spendy, and it may not be worth the money to some, although I think I'm going to pop for it when the free trial expires.
