Earthlink rejected by SPAM Eating Monkey again

I've made a beginning on selecting my images. Picking the one or two
from every session that I consider "best", which is to say images that
won't embarrass me too much to have anyone else look at them.

Having a bit of computer trouble that's slowing things down. Probably
going to have to take my photo computer in to be checked over once I get
them submitted.

Solid state drives & 24GB RAM should *NOT* be giving me "Adobe Bridge
(Not Responding) every time I click on an image. There was a noticeable
increase in speed when I uninstalled Dropbox, but it's still lagging too
much.

I think when I attempted to install Windoze10 it EFFED-UP my video drivers.

Re: Week 4 PDML Photo Annual Update

2018-01-30 Thread ann sanfedele
I'm pretty sure I caught mine at a small but crowded gathering last
Saturday... the NY book launch
of the bio of my friend, poet James Wright. (James Wright, A LIfe in
Poetry) His (second) wife Anne, whose friendship wiht me has continued
over the years since Jims passing age in 1980. I first met them both in
1973. Her part at this particular signing and reading made it important
for me to go and not just dash in and get my book signed since I don't
get to see her much these days since she moved up to a senior residence
upstate in Rhinebeck.

There was a reception at Poets House following the reading of passages
by author Jonathan Blunk, by Annie
and poet/teacher/novelist Donna Masini - who had been Jim's student at
Hunter in the 70's.  The book was a
very long time coming... Blunk had been working on it for a very long
time.. .  I can only read it in small doses..
but it is nicely written.  I wish he read his own prose as well as he
writes.  Happily, Donna's turn at the microphone
telling stories and reading a couple of favorites made it a bit easier
to sit in the uncomfortable chairs.

Too much mingling at the reception.. too many hugs..etc.. sigh.. that
being said, not nearly as dangerous as
getting on plane in terms of picking up unwanted bugs  -  But Hawaii
-they- say is very low on flu monitor so thats in your favor.

I bet you guys can tell I just woke up from a nap (about the third one
today) - in chatty mode.

I did get my three pix in to Mark though...

Here's a forward thinking thought, perhaps as a backup plan.

Compile an email list of all the contributors. Send an opening line to
the first one in the list with the request to add a second line after
it. Then send that second line with the same instructions to the next
address in the list, and repeat for all of them in order.

Volia! The foreword.

Just threatening Doug with this suggestion should elicit some sort of
response from him. :)

PDML Photo Annual update (21 March)

2017-03-21 Thread Mark Roberts
After a couple of phone calls and a couple of emails we've made the
selections for photos that will be in this year's book. A small
handful may change when we get to pairing them up together in spreads,
but that's not very likely.

I've got the theme chosen and the overwhelming majority of the design
work done, somewhat to my surprise. After weeks of panicked work while
feeling myself to be falling hopelessly behind schedule I suddenly
find myself all caught up. Don't worry — my ability to fall behind yet
again will doubtless reassert itself shortly.

For now, I just have to pair up the images as best I can and start
building the spreads in InDesign. Mostly grunt work.

Of course, there's always the issue of getting Doug to write the
foreword...

PDML Photo Annual update

2017-03-14 Thread Mark Roberts
Sorry I've been silent for a while but you know how life intervenes on
things...

We've got all the photos saved and organized and we've almost finished
making the selections. I'm in the middle of Spring Break but, as you
may have heard, also in the middle of a major storm hitting the east
coast. It's turned out to be not quite as bad as feared but I still
spent most of the day shoveling wet, heavy snow out of the driveway.

I've got the theme for this year's book settled and most (but not all)
of the typography sorted. In the next couple of days I'll try to get
through to Doug Brewer for a final consult on photo selection. In the
meantime I'll be working my way through the graphic design of the main
section header pages and assorted other oddities. (It's gonna be
really cool. Trust me.)

In short, things are proceeding as usual: I've started out in a deep
fit of depression, not knowing how this thing will ever come together,
and proceeded on to a sudden fit of inspiration leading into the
oppressive weight of the onerous workload ahead and the panic of not
knowing if Doug will deliver his Foreword on time, to be followed
eventually by the exhilaration of the release of the final
publication.

That's the plan, anyway.

PDML Photo Annual update

2016-03-25 Thread Mark Roberts
It's been a while since I've posted an update, hasn't it? Well, it's
been a busy semester because I'm teaching a new (to me) course and
there's a shedload of extra work involved. And I got held back for a
week with my computer upgrade. But progress has been happening, albeit
at a slower pace than I'd like.

We have 53 photographers participating this year. Bill, Doug and I
have quite unconsciously evolved an interesting judging system. Each
of us rates a photo on the following scale:
 No
 Meh
 Maybe
 OK
 Yes

I don't know quite how we settled on this particular 1-5 rating system
but it seems to be effective. All the photos have been selected at
this point and a lot of the design work for the book has been done.
I've been on it quite a bit this week, in fact, and I don't think
we'll have trouble making the end-of-the-semester deadline.

My new computer, by the way, is, in the words of my friend Pat Lantz,
"slicker than pig snot". I haven't hit it with any really big files
yet (wait till the K-1 arrives!) but I can tell it's a lot faster than
my old machine. I use a sharpening tool called Focus magic which uses
a technique called deconvolution. It's very computation-intensive but
my new machine chews through it much quicker than its predecessor.
It'll make working on the book much less taxing.

More later.

PDML Photo Annual update: Down to the wire

2015-04-27 Thread Mark Roberts
Late last night I finished up the prototype version of PDML Photo
Annual number 7. After some brief last-minute alterations this morning
I uploaded the file and placed an order for a test version. With
expedited delivery it should arrive here on May 4th. This is *really*
down to the wire as Lisa and I depart for the UK on the evening of May
5th. That means I'll have less than 24 hours to view the test copy,
make any necessary changes and additions, create the slightly
different hardcover edition and upload everything.

It's a crazy plan, but it just might work.

That should give me *barely* enough time when we return from Britain
to order a couple of copies to take to GFM. Maybe.

Number 7 is looking good, but I'll be *really* glad when it's done!

The beta version of The Book is now uploading. This will be the proof
copy that'll let ma make final tweaks to the images (usually just a
gamma curve adjustment) and catch any typos that have been missed so
far (it's much easier to find them in print).

Last year Blurb took less than two weeks to deliver. I expect it
depends on the volume they're running so there's no guarantee it'll be
that quick this year.

PDML Photo Annual Update

2013-04-27 Thread Mark Roberts
OK, the 2013 Photo Annual is about 99% done. I have to get the
official URL for the Global Health Initiative program (if possible)
and also the new logo for the program. The logo hasn't actually been
decided upon yet: Dana-Farber has let me set up a competition between
our senior graphic design students to come up with one and that should
be finalized soon (there's only a week and a half left in the
semester!) I haven't finished the Quotations List introduction or the
Global Health Initiative update yet and I still don't have Doug's
Foreword yet but those are all text – I have all the photos and
graphics completed and formatted and that's where the real work is. So
I'll probably upload a prototype book on Monday without the missing
bits. In about two weeks (or less) I'll have a test print which I can
use to tweak the images. By that time we should have all the missing
text and I'l be able to upload the finished product.

So you should be able to order the book in about two weeks.

Yep, Kobo reader is on the list of devices that support ePub format.

I also note that there is now software that will convert ePub format

Excellent! I'll add that information to the web page.

I've also learned that InDesign 5.5 fixed the horrible errors that 5.0
generates in ePub files. (At the price of file format incompatibility
- both backward and forward - with all other versions of InDesign,
even 5.0!) Unfortunately I don't have 5.5 and I'm certainly not going
to buy a copy with 6.0 on the horizon. Fortunately, It's not too tough
to make the 5.0 ePub files validate by editing the XML manually.

yeah, they are license upgrades, not software upgrades; many professionals want
the multiple versions installed for exactly the version compatibility issues
you mentioned, but you can certainly uninstall previous versions; note that it
took 5 weeks for me to get such a free upgrade (for Lightroom)

and as i noted elsewhere, for those with any CS2 or later individual product
license, $30/month will get you a year's subscription to CS-everything; that's
what i'm planning to do; it's $50/month after that

Sorry for the delay... We are of course running late but the Annual is
nearing completion. This semester has been absolutely mad for me, with
a lot of material preparation for the new course I've been teaching.
But things are coming together

I've got all the images formatted and paired up and the layout done.
I'll be checking in with Dr. Carlos at Dana-Farber this week and
writing up a synopsis of how their program is going. Then there's just
a few more pages to format. I hope to be ordering a proof copy by the
end of this week. We'll see...

I'll add one more voice of thanks for all the work and time put into
this project.

Will there be an ePub version this year? I'd like to include a link to
that when I send out notices that this year's annual is ready.

Thanks again...
