with reference to your picture... I really like it a lot. for
whatever reason, I like the pictures of windows and doorways, there
 is
always so much visual interest (yes, I'm weird).

Not so weird - or maybe I'm weird as well.

many times without sanding. It's a neat pic. The only gripe I
 have,
is that without a caption I would not know what the didgeridoos
 were,
but then that's what the caption is for, right? Good job.

I have to confess that I was attracted to the wall and window frame and only
noticed the didgeridoos later.

You might have missed my reply to Marnie about didgeridoos.

It's a good enough picture, but I think it would be even better
if it were possible to see more of the objects through the window.
Maybe a polarizing filter would have lost some of the reflections,
or maybe (horror of horrors!) you could try selectively boosting
the contrast or saturation using Photoshop.

I did actually have a polariser in my bag - must remember to fit it to the
lens.

I'm not adverse to boosting contrast - not sure it would help much here though.

Aah - Peets. The company that has taken the Starbucks technique of
over-roasting coffee beans to a whole new level. Sadly, the American
consumer has been conditioned to think that bitterness is goodness.

As Godfrey has mentioned, there are several local roasting companies
in the bay area that are capable of doing a much better job. And I
am very impressed with Trader Joe's selection (and especially with
their Sumatran Lintong) at around half the price of other brands.

I cannot agree more. No, in fact, I agree completely g I subscribe
to the conspiracy theory that Starbucks habituates its unwitting
consumers to such horrendously bitter smoked coffee that in comparison
real, well-roasted coffee seems 'weak'. Local roasters are definitely
the way to go. The Santa Barbara Roasting Company does a fair job
where I live, but I prefer Trader Joe's Kauai (Kona's not-so-ugly

Good espresso often has less caffeine per unit volume than drip

Long pig: what they serve in the cannibal restaurant.

Assuming the cannibals are human.

Good espresso often has less caffeine per unit volume than drip
coffee, and you drink less of it. What it has over and above drip
coffees in spades is flavor. A 5 ounce glass of drip coffee can keep
me awake at night, a typical 1 ounce serving of espresso never does.

5 ounces? Wuss. g

Seriously, Starsucks has got to be the worst. I buy most of my coffee
from Greencaste Coffee Roasters. The owner roasts his coffee in very
old roasters on the sidewalk in front of the store. Good stuff. My
wife and I go through about a pound every week to ten days, so we
usually have them grind it for the percolator. However, they'll sell
it in the bean, ground however you want, or raw. They also ship:

I made a pot, forget the variety, at GFM. I think Frank had a cup or two.

Looks good!

The two local roasteries (within bicycling distance, the third, and
others, are a bit too far without a car) have an excellent selection
of Kenya, Tanzania Peaberry, Celebes and Harrar beans. Those have
been my favorites in drip coffee for some time now. But I mostly
drink espresso.

Thanks, Bob.

As has already been explained, a 'long black' is black espresso coffee (as
opposed to a 'short black' which is concentrated caffeine!)

with reference to your picture... I really like it a lot. for
whatever reason, I like the pictures of windows and doorways, there is
always so much visual interest (yes, I'm weird). I like the clashing
colors, I like the texture of the wall, I like the broken reflection
in the window panes, I like the frame that has been painted over too
many times without sanding. It's a neat pic. The only gripe I have,
is that without a caption I would not know what the didgeridoos were,
but then that's what the caption is for, right? Good job.

I'm sorry... I forgot to comment on the coffee :) I am not a
connoisseur, but if I can hold the pot up and see light through it,
then it tastes like toilet water. Otherwise I like it to be able to
stand up and walk around on it's own. I do agree with Adam that
coffee should taste like coffee, not
vanilla-hazlenut-maple-flavored-poo. I like *bucks, but around here
some call it Fivebucks.

It's a good enough picture, but I think it would be even better
if it were possible to see more of the objects through the window.
Maybe a polarizing filter would have lost some of the reflections,
or maybe (horror of horrors!) you could try selectively boosting
the contrast or saturation using Photoshop.
