Re: PESO: Free Lunch

2011-09-22 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Bob and Bruce. It is one of my favorite deer images of this year.

I'm not as close as it may appear. I was using my Tamron 75-300 mm
f/4.5-5.6 cranked all the way out to just under 300.

They are getting quite bold of late. They seldom run from us when we
are in a car, but are much shyer when we are on foot. When the fawns
are small, the does will walk up pretty close to you to distract you
from a hidden fawn. The bucks now stand and stare at my puppy if are
in the yard when I let him out. He just stands his ground, and stares
right back, until the move on. He is about 40 pounds now; I am
wondering what he and they will do when he gets to be an 85-90 pound
adult.

The deer have destroyed most of my shrubs and small trees outside the
fenced-in pool area.

Re: PESO: Free Lunch

2011-09-23 Thread Christine Nielsen
Great shot... but I have one question: why are you trying to attract
the turkeys to your yard?

We have been battling an entire family of turkeys all summer... Mom,
Dad & the 6 kids keep wandering into our newly-seeded backyard for an
all-you-can-eat buffet. And our pooch, a lovable goof who seems to
have forgotten his place in the foodchain, has been absolutely no help
at all.

Re: PESO: Free Lunch

2011-09-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for your comments, Christine.

I am not trying to attract them to my yard. They pass though on their
way from the woods on my west to the creek and corn fields to my
southeast. They peck on the sun room windows, dig in our potted
plants on the deck, and poop on our deck. They also search for seeds
under the bird feeders and occasionally try to get up to one of the
feeders and knock it down so they can empty it. What I was trying to
do was to get a decent image of them. They generally run off when
they see the camera. How do they know?

When I was 8 or 9, my grandfather, who had raised chickens for many
years, tried to raise turkeys. They are filthy, nasty birds, much
more difficult than chickens. He only did it that one year, and I was
glad to see them all "adopted" at Thanksgiving time.
