Hi Don. I try to always find something positive to everything in life, but i have to agree, the bokeh is pretty harsh in this shot. The composition of the vegitation is pretty good though.:-)The red against the green is nice. I put the image into iView Media Pro and played with scaling it up and down a bit. Scaled to approximately 2/3 of its current size, the out of focus rendering softens nicely. The ant stands out quite clearly on my monitor as the only area of true black. May be my calibration though, I'll have to check it again, it's been a couple of months. When I first saw the photo, I thought the ant was a cluster of berries of some sort. The photo is somewhat busy right there in the middle. Enlarged 2x, the ant's head, thorax, abdomen and legs are clear. This point is a matter of opinion, so if you're happy with it, who's to say anything otherwise? ;-) Godfrey

Re: PESO: Morning Stroll
Not a bad pic, although the subject of interest (the bug) is not very well suited to shooting at this distance. Bokeh is largely dependent on the shape of the background objects and how distant they are from the subject. Here, you have some very bright objects that are too close to form smooth out of focus patterns. RE: PESO: Morning Stroll
It's a very touchy lens, sometimes the results are very good and other times I've triple checked to be sure I _really_ had an SMCP lens mounted, the results were that bad! It seems to hate backlit and high contrast when wide open or near wide open. As I wrote to Mark, I've had the goofy thing apart 3 times and see absolutely nothing wrong inside. Clean, clear and solid. Zero oil film. I think you may be right about digital being the difference. I'll go shoot some film with it and see how it compares, it's been quite a while since I've used it that way. Don > -Original Message- > From: P. J. RE: PESO: Morning Stroll
That's what I think too, though I've had this lens completely torn down 3 times and everything looks perfect. It was 100% like new when I got it, not even any scuff marks on the mount ring from repeated use. The wierdest part is that it has some worst contrast in back lit situations of any of my SMC lenses when wide open. Yet the coatings are clearly visible and don't appear damaged in any way. Very puzzling. Interesting, I like the image, but I have noticed that the Bokeh, from a number of my lenses that usually give nice smooth oof areas is quite a bit like this on the D. Usually it seems to have something to do with the actual background. Don Sanderson wrote: Out playing with the A50/1.4 (Which I still don't get along with.)
