Dan --

Have to do a bit of advertising here :-)

"take me to your milkweed"

https://www.cafepress.com/annsanstuff/5685588

The shirt originally said "got milkweed?"   but had to be changed
because the California Dairy Assoc. pounced (their ad campaign "got
milk"was onwhen
I first listed the items a few years ago.. sigh.   I think I'd still get
in trouble if I changed it back.

The link above is to my shop listing... the shirt is also in the general
marketplace on cafe pressand even though it isn't constant, I do keep
making a few sales.

I never recognized milkweed in its flowering stage.. its very pretty! -
The second photo, even with the frame-clipped leaves is very nice.

Thanks for looking, Alan.

The subject line was intentionally deceptive, just to get folks to look.

These are Milkweek plants. I am growing them on the deck (shown in the
PESO images) and in my yard to attract and breed Monarch butterflies. (You
may have noticed that I have a thing for butterflies.) I have eggs/larvae
on order, and needed these plants to grow sufficiently to feed hungry
caterpillars.

Monarchs are not only one of the more attractive butterfly species, but
also one of those most threatened. The plants on my deck in pots are
tropical milkweed, which can not survive a winter here, but are highly
favored by the Monarchs for their tender foliage and high nutrient value..
Those I have planted in the yard are local varieties, which I hope will
become perennials. Both varieties are toxic, and make both the larvae and
the adults unpalatable to birds and other predators.

Monarchs from the eastern US migrate to Mexico for the winter, so any who I
release here will not return, but I hope that by planting milkweed in the
yard, others will naturally stop in my garden on their way North. We do
get some here every summer, but not as many as 10 or 15 years ago, so I
want to do my part to increase the population. Besides, they are so much
fun to observe and photograph.

Looks rather different to our Milkweed *(Asclepias*fruticosa) which is
the foodplant of local Monarch species. Cannabis is widely grown here -
illegally of course. We even found the holy weed in our Church garden!
