That's an impressive looking storm!

I agree with most other comments. If you could get darken the sky and
get a bit more contrast there, it would be a stronger image.

I'm not too fussed about cropping the bottom but I'd dial back the
saturation a tad.

Re: PESO: One more storm shot

2010-04-26 Thread Rick Womer
I don't often disagree with Bob and Bruce, but this time I will. I often
advocate cropping, but this time I won't! The shot as it is has a sense of
scale that cropping would diminish.

OTOH, I think the saturation is a bit overdone, and that the sky would be more
foreboding if darkened a bit and boosted in contrast.

i like the foreground, but i think you could crop the sky somewhere
above the tent caterpillars; too bad you couldn't get a bit of orange
into the reflection; maybe desaturate the central greens a bit (leave
the foreground intense)?

Nice cloud - could do without the rest of the clutter - foreground, bush
etc.

Also needs a bit more foreboding.

Re: PESO: One more storm shot

2010-04-26 Thread CheekyGeek
This is my first "real" foray into post-processing (and still starting
from JPEG). Made an adjustment layer to play with the foreground
levels (blowing out the sky) and gradient mask to the horizon to bring
out the the original well-exposed sky. A bit of burning in and bumped
the saturation by +15. (A little too much perhaps?)

Did nothing to mitigate the original ISO 400 noise, which was probably
"enhanced" by the saturation bump.

Will be figuring out how to start with the RAW files next...

The most interesting part is weakened by too much foreground and sky.
if you were to crop the bottom almost to the wire fence and a bit off
the top I think the image would be much more powerful.

Gone digital? I'm always looking for old Pentax film cameras and
lenses to fit Pentax, (either K-mount or M42 screwmount). Also have a
weakness for twin lens cameras.
