Mark, on my screen which is only Adobe Gamma profiled there is a bit of
greenish tint all over...

Nicely done in all other respects.

Very nice placements within a natural looking location. Well caught!
When I first brought it up, my immediate reaction was that it is a
little washed out.
I suppose I had a tiger (shinning bright) image in mind. Is there
possibly the faintest overall light green cast? I sense it, but can't
really confirm it.

maybe. Nevertheless you did very well, obtaining sharp picture
handholding >300mm at 1/125s is quite a feat (if your initials aren't
PSS, that is ;-)).

Any hope to recover some higlights in tiger's face? It's not too
distracting, actually it's one of the best shots from the zoo I've seen
but still...

Cheers,

Peter

That is a nice clean shot. There are some Sumatran tigers at London
Zoo which I've tried several times to photograph, but have never had
anything as nice as that - always bars and suchlike in the way.

Good one! I'd burn in those highlights where the sun hit him, then
increase the contrast in PS curves or levels. I like the framing. The
knee jerk reaction would have been to crop away some of the top and
the left, but I think you did well to leave a lot of context here.

PESO: Sumatran Tiger

2007-02-18 Thread Mark Erickson
All,

The family went to the zoo this morning, and I brought my *ist-Ds and SMC-A
70-210 F/4 kit with me. I find it really hard to get animal pics at the zoo
that aren't obviously zoo pictures. With this one, I finally got lucky and
got a clean shot of one of the Sumatran tigers at the zoo:

http://www.westerickson.net/mark/misc/tiger.jpg

Photograph notes: Camera at 1/125 and ISO400, lens zoomed all the out to
210 and wide open at F/4.

Getting the focus right with the 70-210 is hard! I had several others that
were not quite in focus. Fortune smiled on me and the best composition
ended up as the sharpest. My focus issues were probably a combination of
the slow shutter sped and genuine focus issues. I probably should have shot
at ISO800 and 1/250.

There are only about 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, and about 300 in
captivity. The pair at the Sacramento zoo just gave birth to three male
cubs in November.
