If you hate rodents in your garden, you should try deer.  They eat
everything here, and they just LOVE tomatoes.  To add insult to injury,
they usually take one bite and spit out the remainder.  My
Nest-door neighbor has a 12 ft fence around his garden.  On the advice of
the agricultural extension service, he added a low-voltage wire at deer
nose level, to keep them from barging right through the fence.

We only have about 15 sq.ft. for edibles. Last year we got a good crop of 
tomatoes (regular and cherry); but this year 3 of the 4 tomato plants died (the 
cherry is doing okay). Squirrels ate most of the chard and spinach almost as 
soon as it emerged (I hate rodents!). We also have oregano and basil in the 
garden, and rosemary and chives in pots.
