Oliver can't take the rap for this one. He came later. This Cromwell was Thomas, Henry VIII's chief minister and architect of the programme to dissolve the monasteries and a distant relative to Oliver. Olly was partly responsible for the other piece of cultural vandalism in Rick's picture of the West front of Wells Cathedral, being a leading light in the puritan movement that destroyed many works of art in its campaign to remove idolatry from churches.
