Great shot frank.

I was out that day without my camera and was kicking myself. The Don
Valley looked incredible, with all the trees covered in new snow.
Winters in Toronto are so rarely that nice, and you've captured it
beautifully.

I end up cropping almost everything by some because I prefer a more
square proportion than 2:3 format provides, but I try to do most of
the framing in-camera to maximize quality.

3:4 is much closer to what I prefer so I crop less from that. It's
one of the reasons that the Panasonic L1 and Olympus cameras are
interesting to me. With the L1, I get about the same effective
resolution as I get from the K10D after cropping.

Same here, actually. I hate to crop because it means you aren't using
the entire image area and thus you need more magnification for a given
print or display size.

But I'm now trying to deliberately shoot for different aspect ratios

Okay, let's be serious here for a moment:

I know I've always said "I don't crop". Well, I "don't crop" the way
HCB "doesn't crop".

If necessary, I've always cropped. When shooting film (especially
with a rangefinder), part of the "game" is to "crop in the viewfinder"
so that cropping a print isn't necessary. There had been times when
something was unexpectantly in edge of the frame of the neg such that
cropping it out improved the print to a large degree. I've always
done that.

However, when I've shown or scanned a print with black rebate, that
always meant "not cropped". There was never any dishonesty in that
regard.

Now that I'm digital and shooting almost exclusively with an SLR,
problems arise that make cropping somewhat more prevalent. The
viewfinder doesn't cover the entire sensor-area, for one thing, and
not being able to see outside the framelines (as one can with a
rangefinder) makes it harder to see "what's coming into the frame".
The reality of shooting with any slr is that it's much harder to know
exactly what's in the "actual" frame at the time of exposure, so
cropping is sometimes needed.

And, of course, now that I'm learning photoshop, it's become a fun exercise.

HCB said that he never cropped, but he did (according to his longtime
developer). Very rarely, and as that lab-guy said, those few
exceptions proved the rule.

The vast majority of my digital prints (both real and on the web) are
uncropped...

cheers,
frank

The plug-in for IR can add grain. There are two sliders that say
"grain" right on them, and sliding them left or right certainly does
make the image look more or less grainy.

Could you be thinking of B&W Plus? The IR plug-in seems to be a

Actually, I was thinking it was more of a dreary building in a nice
winter scape.

Glad you liked it, for whatever the reason...

Good shot. Hadn't seen this earlier. I really like it. I think the effect is
the result of underexposing the snow on the ground while preserving much of the
highlights in the streetlamps and surrounding branches. Nice effect. Nice work.
