that may be, but they were taken at nearly the same time. Mat and i have
been talking about some of his issues with his scanner and how that is
affecting the quality of his images.

The shot you've taken seems to have much more interesting lighting on the
leaves beneath the cliff... Well, at least to me...

Hi!

my version of Saturday's and Sunday's Mini PDML.
http://users.bestweb.net/~hchong/Temp/ check out number 4 where my
friend Loren is standing on the same ledge. we know it is well over
100ft straight down before landing on something solid. that place is
Newman's Ledge and has been frequented by painters for probably close to
200 years, and photographers for probably over 100 years. the area where
Mat, Loren, and i hiked was part of the Catskill Mountain House, a world
famous resort from about 1840 to about 1910.

Before someone says something...
While we were out hiking/shooting, Herb did not look at any of my
shots, and I did not look at any of his. I was rather surprised when
we reviewed shots later, that he had chosen similar
framings/compositions as I had for a bunch of shots. Herb did point me
towards a couple of good spots to park the camera, but left the rest
to me.

That being said, I bow to the master, as a lowly apprentice, who
wishes he brought a slightly lower contrast film with him. :-)

There are a couple of pictures at the end of the gallery of the view
outside my bedroom window, along with my version of Herb's #11 shot,
over Kaaterskill Falls. Herb was calmly standing at the edge of a
150-foot dropoff shooting away on the tripod, while I was clinging for
dear life to a tree not far away...

Nice shot! And let's us know where Herb gets those great colors. We don't
have fall color like that in CA.

But I am with frank on this one, the one thing bugging me about the shot is
the horizon line is in the middle. So there is an equal amount of sky and equal
amount of trees, etc. Usually more impact is gained by having either more sky
or more ground. Too static otherwise. So I am with frank on how to crop.

Show more please.

Never get me up that high. Or at least that close to the edge. No way, Jose.

Thanks Frank!
I was thinking that cropping some of the sky might improve it. I'll
have to play around a bit tonight, and see how that looks.

bit of it out would put the emphasis a bit more on herb and the

a camera and a hiking backpack. we went about 5 miles, including some steep
stuff and at least one place where rock climbing experience was useful, and
there was both snow and a lot of wet trail from the rains. all of the
waterfalls were running much higher than normal for this time of year.
