Sorry, Ken, it doesn't do anything for me. Apart from
there not being leaves on the trees, it doesn't look
particularly wintry.

Hi Ken,
This one doesn't quite work for me. I immediately tried to scroll down to see
the rest of it. It feels incomplete. It also appears to be tilted to the right
a bit.

Shot from the tower of St. Mary's University Church, adjacent. This is typical

"Camera" in Italian translates to "chamber" or "room" in English. I believe
but can't confirm that "camera" is also Latin for "room". The legal term
"in camera" means "in a sealed room" or "in private". Old English
universities are very fond of Latin.

Camera is indeed Latin for room and the use by old universities is a
relic of when Latin was the common language of scholars, which it was
up until 200 or so years ago.

In fact the term came to be applied to cameras via the use of the
Camera Obscura for drawing. A Camera Obscura is a dark room, typically
a small hut and usually portable for some definition of portable, with
a pinhole in one wall. The projected image on the opposite wall was
then traced or painted).

The round building is the Radcliffe Camera, built in 1749 as the
science library at Oxford. It is still in use as a reading room for
the library system.

Shot from the tower of St. Mary's University Church, adjacent. This is
typical January weather in England, of course...

Was that originally built as a camera obscura?

"Camera" in Italian translates to "chamber" or "room" in English. I believe
but can't confirm that "camera" is also Latin for "room". The legal term
"in camera" means "in a sealed room" or "in private". Old English
universities are very fond of Latin.

Originally built as a library.

There's a camera obscura in one of the Royal Observatory buildings here in

Thanks Jack.
Since I futz with all the whites, blacks, and midrange tones of every shot in
conversion, I guess one would have to say it's intentional. But since only the
background is bright white, I wouldn't call it "high key."

PESO: January PUG Reject #1

2022-12-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
In searching for an image to submit for the January PUG, I came across
three that brought back pleasant memories. I chose one for the PUG, but
decided to use the others as PESOs, although you may have seen slightly
different versions of them before.

The Bridges of Kings County

This is an image taken from the Observatory Deck of the "Freedom Tower,"
formally known as One World Trade Center, in lower Manhattan. The two
bridges are the Manhattan Bridge on the left and the Brooklyn Bridge on the
right, both of which span the East River, between Manhattan (New York
County) and Brooklyn (Kings County).

The Brooklyn Bridge is particularly meaningful to me, as I had
represented the Roebling family, descendants of John (1806-1869),
Washington (1837-1926), and Emily Warren (1843-1903) Roebling, who designed
and built the iconic bridge by triumphing over great obstacles.

PESO: January Pug reject #2

2022-12-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
As I noted in reference to Reject #1, in searching for an image to submit
for the January PUG, I came across three that brought back pleasant
memories. I chose one for the PUG, but decided to use the others as PESOs,
although you may have seen slightly different versions of them before.

The Shaky Bridge

This Bride is about a mile from our home, on a relatively busy road
connecting two US highways. It is a relic of the days when Branchburg
Township was primarily rural; before the dairy farms were replaced by
condos.

The bridge crosses the tracks of the Raritan Valley Line, a commuter
service of New Jersey Transit. These days, only two eastbound and two
westbound passenger trains use these tracks each day, although a few
freights pass by almost every night.

When we moved here, the bridge, built in 1850, was only one lane wide, and
paved with wooden planks. Not surprisingly, the bridge had deteriorated
over the years, and was referred to locally as "the shaky bridge." Almost
once a week a traffic jam would develop when a tractor/trailer, using GPS,
tried to cross the bridge and then was unable to turn around on the narrow
country road.

Everyone recognized the need for replacement decades ago, but no entity
agreed to take responsibility for it. Finally, 2 years ago, the State
provided a grant to Somerset County, which replaced the span with a
sturdier, all metal, two lane bridge. It still cannot accommodate
tractor/trailers or other large trucks, so there are several large signs in
both approaches to the bridge warning trucks to turn around. Now, a truck
gets stuck there only every two months or so.

This image was taken after the old bridge was closed and the
reconstruction was about to start.

Impressive. The one you finally selected must really be something!

That sort of bridge, even worse, is common in Africa. Surprised yours
has lasted so long.

Re: PESO: January Pug reject #2

2023-01-01 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, Alan!

It lasted that long because the railroad that built it went bankrupt. The
new railroad operating agency, New Jersey Transit, refused to take
ownership of it because of the expense involved. The municipal government
repaired the wooden planking from time to time, but lacked the funds to
finance the replacement. Eventually, the State of New Jersey, using
federal transportation funds, gave a grant to the County to replace the
bridge. (Two county roads meet at the bridge, each leading from a very
busy US highway.)

It was long a local joke, but gradually became a real hazard as traffic
increased and heavier vehicles attempted to cross it. Several vehicles had
to be towed out of the bridge or its approaches.

Re: PESO: January Pug reject #2

2023-01-01 Thread Bob W PDML
There is something similar close to where I live. It’s a wooden toll bridge
across the River Adur which replaced a ferry in 1782 and remained open to motor
vehicles into the 1970s until a modern bridge, the subject of my PUG entry, was
built a little further upstream.

There are several other bridges in that short stretch of river by the estuary,
including a railway bridge, an older road bridge, and two foot bridges. I’ll
post a gallery of them when the PUG goes up.

The wooden toll bridge is still used (toll-free) by walkers and cyclists having
been reconstructed in 190m and 197n.
