Yes, I've noticed that: the beast on the sign looks more like a cow
or oxen than a moose.

There's a bit of recent city history that goes along with this. About
10 years ago a the city had a public art project called Moose in the
City:

http://www.toronto.ca/moose/home.htm

whereby several hundred identical moose were placed at various
locations and sponsors paid artists to decorate them. Some (but not
all of them) had commercial themes. It was actually pretty cool and
lots of fun.

At the end of it all the moose were auctioned off and funds given to charity.

A few dozen (mostly decrepit) moose remain in various locations. I
seem to remember this moose, decorated to look like (I'm guessing) a
Chinese Mandarin (or at least in some traditional Chinese costume)
originally being in some prominent place in Chinatown.

Obviously this market bought the moose at the post-installation
auction and is now using it for promotional purposes. I don't recall
how long that market has been known as the Lucky Moose Market. It
might pre-date the acquisition of said moose, which might explain the
different look for the moose on the sign. It wouldn't explain why
that moose looks so un-moose-like...

Thanks to everyone who looked and commented!

cheers,
frank

My favorite shop name in Chinatown, I've never been able to
satisfactorily capture it on camera. This is far from perfect, but
it's the best I've managed to do yet:

Oh, man! Gotta love that moose in the background! LOL. Looks like a
disguised zebra.

Great catch, Frank. I choose to believe the shop owner has a great
sense of humor behind his choices...
