Thanks, Paul. No, he's not molting that's the normal plumage for a male
Pyrrhuloxia (Cardinalis sinuatus), a relative of the cardinal and only
fairly common in the Rio Grande Valley.

Bokeh's a bit harsh. Are you sure you were using a Pentax lens?

What's that you say? You're shooting with a Canon.

In that case the bokeh's what one would expect.

Nice shot.

;-)

Seriously, Christian, it ~is~ a lovely photo.

Frank makes an interesting point. I reckon it's the teleconverter.
Christian, do a test specifically looking at bokeh, one just using your
long lens, another using the long lens plus TC. Compare. I bet you'll
find the bokeh is harsh on the latter.

My 70-200 2.8 L IS seems fine by itself, but when I add the 2X, it goes
to pot.

Sorry, Cot, yer wrong. The reason for the harsh bokeh on the
Pyrrhuloxia is the junk IN the background. Look at the olive sparrow I
just posted... smooth and creamy bokeh. The 500's bokeh is amazing
with or without the TC. Even stacking a 2x AND 1.4x has shown really
nice bokeh.

Heading off for the last afternoon shoot of the weekend.

That guy was in a tree about 15ft (~4.5m) away. This shot is almost the
full frame. I also use a flash extender which concentrates the beam of
the flash and gives it a bit more reach. It's a very effective way to
add pop to an image, highlight feather detail and fill in shadows.
