Thanks Derby! I'm guessing you're referring to this photo:

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5806/2203/1600/pete(2).jpg

It's one of my favourites ever taken with the fisheye - and it was a
~real~ fisheye since it was taken with the LX. Pete (the rider) was
about 12 to 18 inches from the lens when I took it - I was basically
standing over one of the pylons marking off the race course and he was
cutting it pretty close. I cropped a bit to get him off centre.

Thanks for the nice words!

cheers,

All about courier ice races, including a photo of a studded bike tire:

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2006/02/la-course-sur-la-glace.html

You can buy them ready made, but they're way expensive, so most guys
build their own.

Studs are very impractical on roads, however. Wear down too fast and
the grip on bare pavement is precarious at best.

Surprisingly, I saw a couple of bikes out on Sunday. I road my bike
in much harsher conditions on Friday evening and it was much colder
this morning and I rode my bike part of the way to work (the easy part
- the bike went on a bus rack on the front of a bus for most of the 15
mile commute - I probably only road about 2 or 3 miles) this morning
when it was ~much~ colder than yesterday when this photo was taken.

Bikes are much easier to handle in the snow than most people realize!

Thanks for the nice words.

frank

That must be what's happening to mine. It's all getting covered in this kind

Thanks, Christian.

It's for exactly that reason (snow and ice buildup) that IMHO the
fixed gear bike is the preferred weapon for winter riding. I've
ridden plenty of geared freewheel machines in the slop, and things
tend to freeze at the most inopportune times. One's derailleur
inevitably freezes in the wrong gear, brakes freeze just as you need
to stop at a red light at a busy intersection, etc, etc.

With a fixed gear, none of this stuff happens. One gets steady,
reliable, well-modulated braking (limited only by the tire's traction)
and one's always in the right gear.

After 10 years on the road as a messenger, I can tell you that caked
snow and ice on a bike can literally add 10 to 15 pounds to it!

depends. I figure I get the studs for free as the tyres with studs
cost me about the same as a set of soft rubber XC tyres. I get 3-4
seasons out of a set of studs and at most 2 out of the XC's.

10 months on the summer tyres and 21-28 on studs.

winter tyres are cheap.

I just got a pair of Nokian W106 tires (slightly used, $20 per). All
the studs are outboard of the center line, so I hope they don't suck
on bare pavement. I can't wait to try them out!

I must admit that I have no personal experience with studs, other than
photographing couriers at ice races. Of course, their concern is
restricted to traction on sheer ice - no need to consider something
that would work on both ice and pavement.

I know that ready-made studded bike tires are way expensive. I also
know that in the vast majority of city winter conditions that we meet
here in Toronto can be easily dealt with on rubber.
