I'm still using a CRT, and while it's not readily apparent at web
resolution, in the browser, I was able to download the picture and see
the streak with Photoshop.

It's in the raw file as well. Interestingly, it's not in the previous shot
or the next shot (which is a virtual dup of the one displayed). The only
thing I did on this series of 31 frames was to turn noise reduction on,
since I knew I was going to have a lot of dark areas in the photo. I wonder
if that generated the gar-bage.

I don't think you're seeing .jpeg artifacts. The original raws had a
somewhated raggedy edge to the moon as well, due I'm sure to atmospheric
distortion, the moon being so low on the horizon, and looking through so
much ripply atmosphere with a 500mm lens. I did attempt some smoothing, but
gave up, sitting at work trying to use a touchpad mouse.

Thanks.

Beautiful. I was returning from a business trip yesterday, in a taxi
crossing the Yorkshire moors in the early evening when the moon was
low and the sky was still light. It was very dramatic and I regretted
not having a camera with me. I couldn't have done it justice in the
way you have though.

Nice one, Tom! I'd like to see a larger image that doesn't suffer from
jpeg artifacts on the moon.
