Thanks, Godfrey.

As I said to Peter, I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that although
there are some interesting elements to this one, it's fundamentally
flawed and basically unfixable.

Overall an interesting photo but a bit unbalanced. I do like this
color, full, loose crop over the later version you posted. In this
one I can deal with the bicyclist, but in truth he doesn't belong
there. I like the grafiti counterpoint against the woman and clothing

I appreciate your detailed thoughts on this one.

I agree with you, and others (like Paul) who think this has to remain colour.

As for the bike, well, as I mentioned earlier, I waited for the bike
to leave, but moments later, a car parked directly in front of the
store, completely obscuring my view, so there was no chance to
recompose or reshoot.

I'll continue to work on this one, trying various crops in colour, but
I'm fast coming to the conclusion that this may be one of those
"almost, but not quite" shots. There are many good elements, but it's
essentially flawed such that it's never ~quite~ going to work the way
I want it.

thanks to everyone,

I've been refraining from commenting so far but I figured I'd give you
my thoughts. First it needs the color, to my eye this scene is all about
the color and the contrast to the womans black attire, and you need to
somehow bring out more detail in the womans dress. Secondly. the second
crop is better compositionally. As you know you can't always get what
you want with spontaneous street shooting. The graffiti is interesting
and the whole scene might be worthy of a shot, but with the woman as the
main subject I don't think you can get away with the first crop. I don't
know how fast the bicyclist was moving but I would have tried to get a
second shot as he left the frame, if the *ist-D was up to that that
might have balanced it nicely told a slightly different story and
allowed you to keep the graffiti.
(I was going to put that in Pirate Lingo, but gave up after the first
sentence. Arrr.

I like the loose crop better as well. I also prefer it in color -- by a wide
margin. The colorful rack of clothing makes the shot IMO.

No detail showing on my fairly-well calibrated/adjusted screen here
at work either.

All "balance" issues aside, it looks less interesting in the tight

Well, as Peter says, I tend to tilt, so normally, I'd agree with you.

However, it looks to me like the building is more sagging than I'm
tilting. Looks like the roofline is lower in the middle that at

Toronto's Kensington market is one of the older still-existing
neighbourhoods in town, with many of the buildings about 100 years old
or more (which is very old by our city's standards).

Right.

Well.

Of course. I was looking at all those colours, the graffiti, the
bright clothing, and although I cropped a bit off the left, I didn't
want to lose all that stuff.

However, you're absolutely right about the "weight" of the pic. So, I
cropped a lot out. Then she looked lost, all dressed in black against
the bright coloured clothes. So I converted it to black and white,
which I think works in the crop (below).

But then when I got to the office and looked at it on my work monitor,
I could see there's absolutely no detail in her black dress (amazing
how much detail I can see in my LCD monitor at home that just doesn't
show on my CRT monitor at work). I think I could fiddle with the
brightness/contrast a bit too. So, this is still a work in progress
(they all seem to be with digital; that's one thing I liked with film

I like it. Sharp and edgy. The biker adds to the cinematic moment, and
the graffiti tags are surprisingly touching.

But I think those trousers are a bit too long for Courtney Love.

When I said left, I meant right.

The mistake is a side-effect of breaking my wrist in June. Since
breaking my wrist I wear my watch on the right because the scar on the

In Kensington Market, they don't need no stinking dressing rooms:
