How much did you crop (if at all)?  I'm surprised you used a flash because I 
don't see a catchlight in the bird's eye as expected.  If I were you, I'd stop 
down to f8 and drop the ISO to something a bit less noisy. I think it's a 
chipping sparrow, but i don't have a field guide next to me to confirm.

Thanks Ann. It was the same size as a goldfinch. Perhaps a bit bigger than a 
sparrow.

  After re-consulting Peterson's, I think you're right.  Though, it 
looks like it might be a house finch, due to the less contrasting 
markings around the eye, and more squared-off tail feathers.  Both, very 
similar to a sparrow.


I could never be an ornithologist.  Aside from the difficulty in 
discerning between species, on television, they all seem to wear funny hats.

I've found googling images with keywords to be really useful in 
confirming one's suspicions...
the dicey part with them little finches is whether it is a house finch 
or a purple finch... I think this is a female of one of those

i concur; if it were Denver i'd say house finch, but in Maine 30 years 
ago i'd say purple finch -- you can extrapolate from that data

No, the Pentax 540 and 360  dedicated flashes provide high speed synch with 
late model cameras. However, it's at diminished power.
