Cool plants (I rarely say that), whatever they are.

Actually, the earth isn't warming, outer space is cooling, so it makes
us ~feel~ warmer...

You are right. The first book I looked at had the genders the wrong way round.
Looking at a more academic [the pictures are in bw 8-)] volume, the male are
disc shaped and the female 9-rayed.

This is the only British species of this genus, although there is an aquatic
variant.

LOL.
They've even got sunscreen on their legs, but forgot to shave them.
:-)

Marchantia polymorpha?

A British trait. 8-) Mp, indeed. All male flowers. Females are much
smaller, star-shaped and closer to the ground.

They look like archegoniophores rather than antheridiophores to me,
though that's only going from aussie marchantiophytes. Here the
antheridiophores are shorter, smaller and have flat upper surfaces
(rather than having fingery projections as the ones in the photo). Plus
IIRC the archegoniophores release their spores from the upper rather
than the lower surface.

BTW, I haven't come across the word polymorpha - what does it mean?

David
