thanks, again, G.  I have 4 canon lenses: 100mm 2.8 macro (razor sharp), 
300mm F4L IS (really sharp), 500mm F4L IS (un-fucking believable!), and 
the 18-55mm 4.5-5.6 KKL (krappy kit lens) :-)

Yes, Canon's forte in lenses is definitely the long ones. They're  
wides and normals aren't anywhere near so brilliant.
