The Monmouth Rebellion was a late echo of the English Civil War (Wikipedia has a good entry about it). The Puritans' damage was very intentional, all over England. I'll be posting some pics soon of Glastonbury Abbey, which Cromwell and his boys utterly destroyed (with drawing and quartering the abbot as a diversion).
