RE: Pentax 28-105 4 5.6 Power Zoom Auto Focus lens

2002-06-07 Thread Robert Soames Wetmore

Hello, Ed -

The 28-105 FA Powerzoom is indeed an excellent zoom. And this is coming
from someone who isn't a fan of zooms. It's my main general purpose zoom on
my PZ-1p and I've grown to really like it.

Optically, I find it to be excellent: very sharp and possessing above
average color rendition. It demonstrates very little problem with flare.

The build quality is decent - as good or better than any other zoom I've
seen, short of the pro-level FA* stuff. It's a little large for this focal
length, maybe because of the power zoom functionality.

The only problem is that it is a bit slow - but, again, this is coming from
a primes guy. It's the same speed as most zooms in this focal length.

Although recently having been replaced, the orignal black FA Powerzoom model
is still available new at Focus Camera for $255. I'm not sure what you
should pay used.

John Coyle directed you to the archives - and he's right: there has been
very consistently high praise for this zoom on this list previously.
However, I've decided to comment and rehash some of this because the last
time I checked, the archives went back about a week or two. (The digital
milieu isn't exactly a repository of permanence.)

I recommend you buy the zoom!

Rob

B&H and/or KEH still list these lenses as being available new
(and the link to the item page definitely shows the power zoom lens).

Robert,

I just got a used one a few days ago, they are not that difficult to find but you pay
a premium for them, even used. I'd guess they are discontinued, since Pentax is now
selling the rebadged Tamron 28-105's. did you get this off of Pentax's web site about
the lenses still being current?

Pentax 28-105/4-5.6 Power Zoom

2001-01-29 Thread Joseph Tainter

You're right, it's the best there is. Therefore it's probably
discontinued.

Frankly, I have been expecting Pentax to discontinue this lens. It
appeals mainly to serious users, and Pentax has the Tamron rebadge for
other (most?) buyers. Plus the Power Zoom has - let's not mince words -
power zoom. That is, it has a feature almost no one wants that adds size
and weight to the lens, and can't be used in newer bodies. It's not as
good a match to the current M/ZX series (too heavy) as it is to the
older P/Zs. From what we've seen, it will probably also be too heavy for
the new body. A great pity, but it may be that if the new 24-90 is a
high quality zoom, it is meant to replace the Power Zoom 28-105.

Buy one while you can.

Joe

2001-01-29 Thread RDJ92807

According to Pentax, this is still a current lens. Does anyone know if it
has been discontinued? Many retailers no longer seem to have it in
stockyet its the best of the 28-105s! Any information out there?
