Pentax brand flashes with PC Terminal?

2004-11-06 Thread Steve Pearson
Are there any Pentax brand flashes that can be used
with the PC terminal? Or do they all require the 5P
and other Pentax sync cords?

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm leaning
towards a Vivitar 285HV.

TIA!

I'm a big fan of the 283, which is the same as the 285 without the
zoom head. Don't know if it is still available. I had a 285 for many
years, I don't know what became of it. I recall it was a battery hog,
but that as long as it was kept fed, it was a strong workhorse.
The hot shoe on them is a bit frail, so be careful not to bump it
hard.

283's are still available new, and they are PLENTIFUL on the used market.
Be careful though, since there are three distinct generations of 283's
and the two earlier generations have 80-90 volts on the PC terminal
(later version is 5-6 volts).

I've got 4 working 283's, and one for parts, at home, covering all
three generations. And as a side note, the hot shoe is fairly easy to
replace should you break it.

Thanks Mat for the reply. Do you (or anyone else)
know if there are any voltage issues with the 285
versions?

Thanks again!

Steve... Funny you should ask this. I have a 285 (non-HV) that measures
8.36v at the foot. I've used this with my ZX-M and MZ-S without ill effects,
but I couldn't find any reliable information on what either of these bodies
can handle without getting fried.

At any rate, I'm selling my 285 kit and switching to the AF360FGZ so I can
take advantage of TTL flash and the other stuff the 360 offers.

A few years back, one of the pop mags did a body roundup that listed
permissible flash voltage. All the Z bodies at the time were 300V.
This is before the -L, -ist bodies came to market.
