PowerPC G5 iMac and Huey

2007-04-12 Thread Rick Womer
Does anybody else have a PowerPC-based G5 iMac that
they have calibrated with a Huey?

What results do you get?

I get peculiar discolored posterized shadows; Pantone
has no idea why. The Huey works wonderfully on our
MacBook.

I have no experience with that particular setup, but I and others
have seen various issues with the Pantone Huey and different system
configurations. Because of those issues, and similar issues with the
Spyder2 product, I generally recommend the Eye One Display 2 instead.

Poor or inconsistent profiles on various different monitors.

OK, not that I can appreciate this given that I've profiled at least
ten very different monitors using my Spyder2 always with excellent
measurements and apparent visual consistency.

See the link to the report details of the last cal that I performed on
my monitor just days ago:

Rob,

There are thousands of these units in use and the vast majority of
people report no problems with them. The same is true for all the
different colorimeters.

In 2004, when I went to buy a colorimeter, I asked my engineering
colleagues at Apple who are much more knowledgeable than I about such
things. Apple's engineering folks working on monitors and ColorSync
recommended the Gretag Macbeth Eye One Display unit. They found that
the ColorVision Spyder and its software was the most inconsistent of
all the units that they had tested, and they had standardized on the
Eye One Display unit for their own testing purposes. They test and
calibrate displays several hundred times a month.

Since that time, when I browse around photo forums and talk to people
who have monitor calibration units, the Spyder2 and the Pantone Huey
are the two that are most often mentioned, by a factor of several
multiples, as having some problem or another with profiling a
particular monitor or in a particular system configuration. I have
never heard a single person complain that an Eye One Display
calibration unit did not do the job properly, although I'm sure that
someone out there had a problem with one of those too.

Unscientific, for sure. But I stand by my recommendation. At least
three dozen people whom I've assisted, either professionally or
personally, have been very happy with the Eye One Display. That's at
least another 36 monitors as a sample set ... good enough for me. :-)

Godfrey
