No problem. Sorry i'll miss the well printed but mediocre shots at GFM.:-)

This is the one feature i like about the gmail account, the labels.
Makes it easy for me to label all printing, LR etc threads for

yeah, well, then I doubt I'd ever see it at all. I don't want to login

Printing should be done using a regular workflow. I print with Epson

printer driver interfaces are similar between Epson models, but UI is
not identical between the OS implementations of LR. Setting up sizing

thanks for your attention. This looks similar to what Dave copied a

The printer driver interfaces are similar between Epson models, but UI
is not identical between the OS implementations of LR. Setting up
sizing and such is always a fussy bit of business.

1- select the image you want to print and switch to the Print module

2- pick the "maximize size" template

3- click the Page Setup button. Here you pick the printer, the paper
size, and the orientation. Click OK.

4- click the Print Settings button. Here you select the printer
specifics for your intended paper feed, paper type, printer
resolution, etc. For LR color managed printing, turn off color
management in the print driver.

-- Note that with Epson printers, any of the "borderless" print
driver options will stretch the image and cause various oddities in
sizing and placement.

-- (These two steps, 3-4, might be combined into one "Attributes"
setting interface on Windows.)

5- Now start working your way down the list of right-hand LR panels to
set up the print sizing. Turn on the Guides to see where the margins
and gutters are.

6- When you get to Print Job with 1.4.1, I normally left Print
Resolution set to 240 or 300 ppi. (With LR2, I usually leave it
unchecked as LR2 has print sharpening built in.) The pick the paper
profile you want to use and the rendering intent.

7- Now, on the left hand panel, click the Template Browser's "+" sign.
Name the template.

8- Click Print One to make a test print. If all is good, you're done.

At this point, printing should be a piece of cake. Select your images,
click into the Print module, select the template you made. All the
settings will be applied to each photo as it prints.

Re: Printing from Lightroom

Thanks Godfrey.

I;'ll print that out, when i am on the PC.

I had sized the photo in develop mode, i think, then in print module,
i set up the canvas size with the sliders. It worked for the 8x10, but
when i did a 5x7 it only printed out as a 3x4 ish photo.

I'll print out you guide and have it next to me for the next one.

In PSCS2 i have a hard time getting my IR to print out as on screen,
but i have found they print out very nicely in LR.

On Dec 19, 2008, at 10:08 AM, David J Brooks wrote:

My problem is still with gettin the right size print out.

If using Lightroom ...

---
A:: Set up the cropping proportion with the Crop tool in the Develop
module.

---
B:: Set up a print template in the Print module.

- In the Print module, first go to the Template Browser and click on
the Maximize Size template.

- Then click on the Page Setup button ... set the printer, paper size
and orientation. After that the Print Settings button, set up the
printer specific parameters for how you want to print.

*** Note that actual dimensions on paper drift a little depending on
the particular printer and printer driver you use. I also find that
using any of the "borderless" paper settings causes odd shifts and
scalings in the actual printed dimensions with Epson and HP printers.
The only way to be sure if you're striving for dimensional accuracy is
to do a test print and see what the shifts are. ***

Now you're ready to size the image onto that paper. On the right hand
Print module palette, start at the top with the Layout Engine and work
your way down the settings until you have everything set up the way
you want your image to appear on the paper.

- When you're done, go back to the Template Browser and click the '+'
button, create and name a new template for printing that size image.

- Now press the Print One or Print... button and make a print.

In the future, you can apply this sizing information to *any* image
file you choose by simply going to the Print module, click on that
image in the FilmStrip at the bottom, then click on the template in
the Template Browser.

*** Note that if you choose a file that you haven't applied an 8x10
proportion crop to, and your image files are 2:3 or 3:4 proportion,
the Print module will fit them to the template you choose based on the
options you chose in the "Image Settings" panel, second from the top
on the right.

- Zoom to fill will "auto crop" them ... you can move the image around
in the image cell on paper until you get it where you want it.

- Rotate to Fit will do a best fit on the long axis.

Leave both of them off and LR will fit the image to the template as
best it can given both of the orientations and cropping setup you've
defined. ***

---
There are a few other subtleties ... watch for the interaction between
what you set in the Print Settings dialog and the specifics of what
you set in the Print Job panel on the lower right.

- If you want to use the printer driver's color management controls,
be sure you set the Print Job to "printer settings".

- If you want to use a color-managed print workflow using paper
profiles, be sure to set "No Color Management" in the printer settings
dialog, then configure and pick the correct paper profile for that
printer in the Print Job settings.

Re: Printing from Lightroom

2008-12-19 Thread Igor Roshchin

Mark,

As for the workflow between PS and LR, - I second Godfrey's suggestion.

I have salvaged a few images using Focus Magic. These were
taken at some dance events, -- so no way to redo, and sometimes
no time to focus more carefully. on the original capture.
And LR's sharpening capability was not sufficient.

However, indeed, on many occasions I found that LR's "sharpen" tool
yields comparable (or sometimes even slightly better) results.

I haven't tried printing from LR.

Why do you "export" and then "reimport"? Why not just use the

Photoshop for whatever editing you want to do?

I haven't found a need for FocusMagic at all, personally. Tried it
once or twice and it just didn't seem to do anything I couldn't do
more sensibly by focusing correctly on the original capture and with
Lightroom or Photoshop's supplied sharpening tools.

Hmm. I've not had the same problems you do printing from a ProPhoto
RGB image in Photoshop. In my print tests, they are very near to
identical on rendering. Lightroom will occasionally show a slight edge
on certain images. The ability to create an apply printing templates
to any number of photographs makes printing from Lightroom FAR FAR
more consistent and efficient than Photoshop for me. I've not printed
*anything* from Photoshop for most of this year.

Why do you "export" and then "reimport"? Why not just use the
Lightroom command to "Edit in Photoshop" ... It renders the PSD or
TIFF for you, automatically adds it to the catalog, and opens it in
Photoshop for whatever editing you want to do?

I haven't found a need for FocusMagic at all, personally. Tried it
once or twice and it just didn't seem to do anything I couldn't do
more sensibly by focusing correctly on the original capture and with
Lightroom or Photoshop's supplied sharpening tools.

printing images in ProPhoto RGB color space from Photoshop and ended
up converting them to Adobe RGB or sRGB for printing. I have no idea
why this should be: I always turn off color management in the
printer driver and turn it on in Photoshop and select the proper
paper/ink profile, but I never get good looking prints that way from
Photoshop if the original image is ProPhoto RGB. Perhaps the
algorithms for re-mapping between color spaces are better in
Lightroom because I followed the same procedure and got a great
looking print on the first try.

The only down side is that I can't use Focus Magic on images in
Lightroom - I have to export a PSD or JPEG, apply Focus Magic, re-
import into Lightroom and then print. Fortunately the sharpening
capabilities of Lightroom are good enough that this will only be an
issue for large fine art prints or a few select photos.
