Problem w/ Super Program

2002-04-26 Thread TM

Just got a new Super Program off of ebay and it's
got a problem- shutter appears to be working properly,
but the mirror seems to "stick," not returning right
away and making quite a bit of racket when it finally drops
back down.

Any idea what the fix might be? Looks like this camera is
going in for a CLA. :-(

Shouldn't it be going back to the seller, instead?

Got a question for you all about this- if you buy a camera off of ebay,
what has been your experience on returning the camera if everything's
not
kosher?

It would be nice if people used some sort of standard inspection/testing
period like they do w/ wristwatches. I'll see what the seller has to say
in the meantime.

Taka,

Send the camera back. I bought a KX that was described as in excellent
condition. When I got it, I noticed that the mirror lock-up was going to
about 90% open and the film winding was very 'loose'. I sent it back as not
excellent condition...it wasn't. The seller said 'Oh' and sent me my money
back, less shipping.

If it was described as anything but 'AS IS', send it back!

This is a question you ask each seller BEFORE you "win" the auction.

Cory Waters
whose first Ebay buy was a 100mm lens in Cannon mount :( because he didn't
ask.

Possible solution to problem w/ Super Program- need advice

2002-05-04 Thread TM

OK, here's the deal:

I bought a Super Program off of ebay, advertised as in excellent
condition.

Camera arrives in a box that is a bit small, has a small dent in the
bottom
plate, don't know whether that was from shipping or not. Camera looks
okay
externally, but when I remove the lens, guess what? Of course, the
mirror foam
is all deteriorated and sticking to the mirror. Testing by shooting
several
frames makes it worse. Obviously, the camera needs CLA.

Talk to the seller, he says the camera is in excellent condition- I send
him
digital photos of the camera's dent and the mirror foam.

He offers to contribute towards the cost of CLA.

I think other than the mirror foam, the camera looks pretty good. The
A50/2.0
is worthless- aperture doesn't look hexagonal when stopped down- nearly
pentagonal
as one of the blades isn't stopping down properly.

For $120, I guess I can't ask for too much, but is this a fair
resolution, provided
the seller gives me $60 back towards CLA? I think it's fair, any
suggestions for a
counteroffer if he rejects this proposal?

Without PDML, I'd totally be up the creek w/ this deal- thanks again to
all.

Taka,

Take the camera to a repair person and get an estimate on the spot. Have
this amount as a negotiating point. You are already out the $10 or so
shipping involved. $120 would be just fine for a CLA'ed Super Program. Much
more is not such a good deal. Repairing the A50/2 is probably not
worthwhile.

Did you buy this from a southern climate?

RE: Possible solution to problem w/ Super Program- need advice

2002-05-04 Thread TM

Bob-

I already have an estimate, from Essex Camera, from their website.
Granted, it's not _exact_ based on standard CLA, but that's where I
plan on having it serviced anyway.

I'm kind of at the seller's mercy, because worst case, all I can do is
file a dispute w/ PayPal and Ebay and return the camera.

I'm not planning on repairing the lens.

Camera is from SoCal.

If I can get half of the CLA cost, that would make it a $180 Super
Program,
which is still less than what I can get one for from KEH or elsewhere
and
other than the mirror foam, it really does look to be in nice condition.
Not
as nice as my Super A, which was bought new and hardly used, but still
quite nice.

2002-05-05 Thread Robert Woerner

If I were you I would tell the seller you are returning the camera. Sounds
like he was dead wrong about the condition and that is his problem, it
shouldn't be yours.
This has happened to me once buying a camera through an Ebay auction. I
bought a "needs repair" ME Super with a 50mm f1.4 M lens described as "in
great condition"(I wanted the lens). I received a DOA ME Super as expected
only it came with a fungus infested lens. I e-mailed the seller immediately
and told him how disappointed I was. I had sent him $90.00 for junk. He
refunded my money and apologized profusely. I ate shipping(about $12.00) and
we left positive feedback for one another.

Be nice yet direct. If this doesn't work out you can try to resolve the
dispute through Ebay. Get your money back... there are deals to be had on
SuperPrograms quite often.

BTW I got a deal last summer from KEH...SuperProgram with 50mm f2.0 lens in
excellent condition for $149.00.

RE: Possible solution to problem w/ Super Program- need advice

2002-05-05 Thread TM

Robert-
Thanks for the advice. The camera besides the foam looks good and it
seems to work well otherwise, that's why I'm hesitant to just give
up on the whole thing. The lens being junk doesn't really bother me,
because I don't really need a 50/2.0 anyway.

If this is a fatal flaw in an ebay transaction, I guess I just don't
have enough experience buying camera stuff through ebay- KEH quotes
$35 for a simple cleaning and foam replacement. If the seller is willing
to cover that, I might go ahead and do it, becuase pretty much any
camera getting to this age could use a cleaning anyway. That's my take
on the whole thing.

If he's unwilling to do that, I'm going to demand that he accept a
return
and I'll ship it back to him, eat the shipping and leave a positive
feedback.
