The electricity at Cragside was generated with running water, from reservoirs in the grounds, and using turbines designed by Armstrong. The house also boasted hot and cold running water, and a hydraulically powered passenger lift and other bits of equipment. Well worth a visit. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/traveltrade/propertydetails.cfm?property_id =195 I used to live in Wylam, where Hedley, Hackworth and Stephenson did so much pioneering railway stuff. It was also the home of Charles Parsons, the inventor of the steam turbine, and designer of 'Turbinia'. Steve.

Hi, Saw on in the flesh today for the first time. Nice marketing, Pentax. I live in only the third biggest conurbation in the UK (5-7 million people) and it took you over a month to get one here. Stuck in a corner of a window display of one of the smallest camera shops in the city. The 300D, conversely, is even in the box shifter shops now, with whacking big adverts next to it. Even allowing for the price discrepancy, it is no wonder the Pentax market share is so limited. Grumpy Old Man

Hi, Peter Jordan wrote: Well done. If the *istD has reached Tyneside, electricity and running water can't be far behind!!vbg. First house in the world powered by elecricity? Cragside, owned by the Newcastle shipping and armaments magnate Armstrong. First turbine powered ship? Turbinia, manufactured on Tyneside. Inventor of the light bulb? Joseph Swann of Sunderland. Matches? John Walker of same. First passenger steam railway? Stockton on Tees. Enough, already? 8-) OK, I know that the railway is about 40 miles away. But the guy who built the locomotive was born at Wylam and built it in a shed behind the present Newcastle railway station. mike

I don't think that Pentax is making them fast enough and, apparently, they are taking care of their most loyal dealers first. I paid a bit of a premium to get the one I have.
