Come on. Now you are pretentious yourself. Give us a little slack,
and know, that for many, there is a big difference between a tourist
and a traveller. I could say the Czech words but you wouldn't
understand the slang - in English the words I used might take on a bit
of a different meaning...

I'm not well-read, so I don't drop book titles very often (not having
read many of those things - books that is), but one of my faves is
Under the Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles (who was quite a photog, BTW,
and had at least one book of photos published that I'm aware of). One
of the characters (can't remember which) was quite adamant that (s)he
was a traveller, and not a tourist, as they trekked about the Middle
East/Northern Africa.

Your comment reminded me of that book.

Bertolucci made a great film of The Sheltering Sky, one of my all-time
favourites. Paul Bowles has a cameo role at the end. And in fact I think I
have his book of photos somewhere.

I've met a lot of people who claim to be travellers, not tourists. I'm
always happy to admit that I'm a tourist. I noticed a sign yesterday in a
nearby pub window which said No travellers allowed in this pub - it's an
attempt to keep gypsies out (and probably illegal). I'm sorely tempted to go
in there dressed as a gypsy and tell them I'm a tourist, not a traveller.

I love that movie!! One of the few Debra Winger roles I've enjoyed.
And, of course, John Malkovitch... Anyway, I thought the movie really
captured the spirit of the book.

The book of photos that I was able to borrow was really a bunch of
(mostly, IIRC) middle eastern snapshots. He was quite good. Quite
the interesting fellow (as was his marriage to Jane Bowles). If you
haven't read her short novel, Two Serious Ladies, you should. It's a
hoot! (at least I thought so, my sister hated it, but what does she
know).

Re: Back from Ukraine

2005-09-07 Thread Graywolf
Over here in a pickup truck towing a travel trailer with a For Sale sign on it.

You can buy the trailer for only 2 twice what it cost because of a family emergency and he needs the money to get home. Sometimes you come across those Gypsy fortune tellers who have only been at that location for three generations.

In the old days here in the US the Romany and the Irish Horse Traders used to
get into fights, each claiming they were the real travelers, although the Irish
never admitted to being Gypseys. Come to think of it neither did the Romany...

Now as to the difference between a traveler and a tourist? If you are paying your own
way you are a tourist, if someone else is paying your way and you really would rather
be home you are a traveler GRIN. All other definitions are meer pretentions.

Strangely, as a guy who has always wanted to see what was around the next
curve, or over the next hill, one to whom the trip was always more interesting
than the destination, I have never called myself either one.

Sigh! These days I do not have the energy to walk (really the best way to go), nor
the money to go any other way... Sigh!

Overall, it was a great trip, and once you learn a bit Ukrainian and
