Hey, wait a sec. Nobody on the list is even from Greece. How did this
start? :)

Funny, we Brits usually drop the H from the beginning of words!

Yes Mark but the word Ellas is the Greek people's own name for Greece in the
Greek language(admittedly with different character set) and Hellenic is
English for things Greek - so the H is an add on in English as Colin states
to cover the "breathing sound".

Hellas (Grk., "Land of the Hellenes"), name that came to be applied to
ancient Greece, including the Greek islands and colonies. The name became
common after the great migrations of Hellenic peoples, beginning about 1100
BC. Modern Greece, in accordance with classical tradition, is also known as
Hellas or Ellas.

"Nippon" instead of "Nipon". "Nihon" is also fine but I understand that
"Nippon" is more formal.
Either way, it does not make much difference in the fact that it is a small
island nation somewhere in the Pacific :-)

Hi,

Great work. Thanks Chris.

Oh, BTW, Pine can handle the accents if you specify the Character set, I
think; in the setup change the value of "character-set" to iso-8859-1 (for
most western languages).

Hi,

thanks Chris - a fascinating list.

International as we are I think most of us can figure out Eesti,
Magyarorszag, Nihon and so on, but thanks for the bracketed
translations.

But what on Earth are OH, PA, SC, WI and so forth?
