I've been in communication with Frank at GFM. The nature museum and
auditorium are currently under construction and undergoing massive
upgrades, so they aren't available for use. So with no food services
and no place to hold the photo presentations or contest and awards
there's no way they can hold a Nature Photography Weekend. They're
doing a much more low-key event (everything outdoors) in August this
year.

That's what it says in the link.

"Due to COVID-19 and ongoing renovation to the Grandfather Mountain Nature
Museum, the nonprofit nature park’s annual Nature Photography Weekend and Camera
Clinic have been combined into one event for 2021"

Maybe next year it will go back to being separate weekends or maybe the new
format will work well and they'll decide to keep on with it.

But it does say:

"The annual Nature Photography Weekend photo contest will also return."

Will the Doug & Mark show return with it?

Many thanks. An interesting bit of nostalgia. I'd love to be able to

don't know who the "stars" are. Perhaps someone could assist with that?

The shots on and around the mountain bring back memories - I haven't
been there in about 50 years. Although I have lived within about a mile
of the Parkway (at its closest - the nearest entrance is about 3 miles
away by road) my range is all in the northern half. When I am on the
Parkway in recent decades it has always been between Rockfish Gap (mile
marker 0) and Fancy Gap (mile marker 200).

Last Sunday week I decided to take an afternoon drive to Mabry Mill. I
hadn't been there in about 20 years and had forgotten its orientation.
Morning is best for the preferred view of the wheel side of the mill and
I was there in mid-afternoon. I took a number of shots, but they were a
bit dull because the mill is a weathered gray. I decided to warm things
up a bit and this shot, taken through a Hoya Sepia B filter, is my
favorite:

Steve got to see this message twice. After decades with my old email
client I finally had to switch to something current. I am still learning
it and haven't yet figured out how to set it to default to replying to
the list instead of the sender.

Unfortunately, my alternative (Earthlink) is also being screwed up by
spammers right now. Several of the IP addresses for their mail servers
keep getting blacklisted by the SPAM catching service the PDML Server
uses. If my post to PDML catches one of those IP addresses it gets
bounced by the PDML server.

Finding anyone at Earthlink to address the problem is almost as
difficult as finding someone at Yahoo.

... and y'all should remember all the aggravation Time-Warner &
Roadrunner email gave me (and AnnSan).

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2017-04-04 Thread John Sessoms

I'm currently using Yahoo for PDML.

There's a known problem between Yahoo & Gmail regarding mailing lists.
Gmail says Yahoo mail fails Yahoo's own authentication and marks the
Yahoo messages as SPAM.

I'm pretty sure there's a way Gmail can create a filter to white-list
the email address.

Like I said, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who suggested they could do
better.

I'm planning to attend IF I don't forget to register on time (done that
before). But I live in Raleigh, NC, so it's not a big journey for me,
plus there's always a big contingent from the Carolinas' Nature
Photography Association that I belong to.

Here's the program:

The only one I'm familiar with is Vinnie.

I think it used to be done by telephone at midnight until the last
several years when they switched to on-line registration. They tried to
get that live at midnight, but for some reason the servers just wouldn't
cooperate. You couldn't get registered until somebody came to work in
the morning to straighten on-line registration problems out.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who suggested that if their

until the staff got to work in the morning.

Looks like that's what they're doing this year.

Re: Grandfather Mountain 2015

2015-03-22 Thread John

I don't know if last year sold out or not, but best bet is to figure on
a couple of hours. Last year I registered at about 2 minutes after it
finally opened up & my number was up around 100 (out of I think 164 spaces).

If I don't get a confirmed space, I get 'em to put me on the waiting
list. The two times I've had to do that, I eventually got in.

I think it used to be done by telephone at midnight until the last
several years when they switched to on-line registration. They tried to
get that live at midnight, but for some reason the servers just wouldn't
cooperate. You couldn't get registered until somebody came to work in
the morning to straighten on-line registration problems out.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who suggested that if their
internet support staff wouldn't come in special to fix registration
problems at midnight they should just delay the start of registration
until the staff got to work in the morning.

Looks like that's what they're doing this year.

The 2015 Nature Photography Registration will open at 8:00 AM Eastern
Daylight Time on Wednesday April 1 instead of Midnight as it has been in
the past.

They're also going to allow participants to enter GFM at 10:00am on
Friday, May 29, instead of mid-afternoon, to give participants more time
to shoot during the day.

I got their email on March 14, so that will give you some idea how far
behind I am on stuff.

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2014-04-01 Thread John

Well, just so you know ... my experience when it did happen last year,
they corrected it RIGHT AWAY.

Everybody makes mistakes now and then, the telling is in how they handle
them. They handled theirs well.

Whatever the reason, this time it worked. I’ve only received 3 emails
so far, a Purchase Confirmation, a Registration Confirmation, and an
Order Invoice. As far as I can tell, they all relate to the same
purchase - i.e. I won’t have multiple charges.

If they're not going to have someone around to fix the inevitable

they don't set it up to go live at 8:00 am when there's someone

It appears to be fixed now. I was able to place my order this
morning. I've gotten 5 emails from Grandfather Mountain since I
successfully registered 15 minutes ago, TWO of them being
confirmations that I'm registered.

I will be checking my statements closely to be sure that doesn't
mean I'm going to be charged for the failed attempts last night.

I got charged twice last year, but I sent Landis an email & she had
it fixed within 24 hours.

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2014-03-31 Thread John

There shouldn't be any shipping involved.

You register & then you show up at the tent down by McCrae Meadows at
3:00pm on Friday May 30, to check in and pick up your packet.

I have had trouble with the online registration every year since they
went to it. The first couple of years I went, they still had the
telephone registration by the 800 number & you just started calling at
midnight EDT and kept redialing until you got through.

I sent 'em an email & I left a voice mail. I'm going to bed & I'll call
'em again first thing in the morning.

And I was hoping to attend that this year, but our bus company is
doing the start up meetings, bus route and bus pick ups differently
this year and my meeting falls on that Friday, so no can do.

I don't know.
I don't think a cancelation fee will keep anybody from signing up.
It sells-out too fast.
We could pay a bit higher fee if they need the money,
but I'd like access to the mountain all Friday afternoon.
It's a 1.5 day drive, and by 1-2 pm Friday, we're there.
Regards, Bob S.

It seems they get a lot of people signing up even though they aren't
sure they can attend - because it sells out so fast. I'm going to
suggest to Landis and the management that they institute at least a
nominal cancellation fee in the future.

Really, I'm surprised. Weather related maybe ???. To late to try and
