The lens produces an image sized for an APS-C sensor... in general use. But for close focusing the lens is extended farther away from the image plane (sensor) and thus projects its image over a larger area. Large enough for a full-frame sensor. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
That is interesting. I am trying to grok why it would not work at infinity on a full frame camera. I assume it must be vignetting though typically vignetting would be more pronounced at full extension (i.e. in macro mode) and not at infinity. There would be no reason I can think of as to why the parts of the frame that work on an APS-C sensor would not also be good on a full frame sensor. Forget my last e-mail, I saw extension tubes in the description and jumped to the wrong conclusion! Tubes better AFTER the lens! I so wanted an easy way out. Maybe I'm missing something, but to photograph a whole 35mm slide on an APS-C sensor, you need less than 1:1 magnification, so any lens that goes to 1:1 would suffice without extension tubes. You don't need a lens that goes to 2:1. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'm interested in using my K3 for slide copying. What previously put me off is getting an exact match with extension tubes to make up for the crop sensor. OK if you have a FF camera, you can get 1:1 reproduction with a macro lens without the need for extension tubes. Would this lens potentially be the way forward for this task? Apart from speeding up the process, I would have the benefit of putting a decent size RAW file of the image to put into Lightroom or wherever and I wonder if it would capture more information of the image than an older scanner would? I expect you've all converted your slides years ago, but to me this is still a hot topic! Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
Dan, why not? Yes it can. I don't understand what's the problem. As for Petapixel's comment, - it is strange by itself. Many lenses are compatible with both crop sensor and full frame DSLRs, but may have somewhat limited use on the full-frame cameras (smaller image circle, vignetting, ...) It's a similar situation here. And since Petapixel is just summarizing information from the manufacturer's website, I suspect they do not have much information of what is actually happening. Only APS-C cameras can use it for both macro and everyday photography." If this is true, it can't be used on the K-5 as claimed in the eBay listing, can it? I think what he meant was: On APS-C you can use it as a macro lens or a normal lens On full-frame you can use it only as a macro lens This would be expected for a crop-format lens: At normal distances its image circle is only big enough to cover an APS-C sensor. La closer distances, where the lens is extended far from the focal plane, it will cover larger sensors. I'd never thought of it before, but this would apply to any macro lens that's designed for crop sensors. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The K-5 is an APS-C camera, so the lens can be used for all its functions (macro and everyday). The confusion may be because of the wording of the announcement. Where it says: "you can only use it for macro photography if you mount it to a full frame camera" I would move the "only" to read: "you can use it only for macro photography if you mount it to a full frame camera [i.e., not for normal-distance photography]" The comments at PetaPixel explain why this might be the case. At infinity focus, the image circle likely covers only APS-C. Focusing at macro distances moves the lens forward, like using an extension tube, which enlarges the image circle sufficiently to cover full frame. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
The manufacturer is a brand-new Chinese company: http://www.venuslens.net/about/ It appears that very few of these lenses have been sold (outside of China) so far. Besides ebay, the only other way to buy them is directly through the company's website.
