Nikon is quiet only as long as you use expensive AF-S lenses. Otherwise its
AF is only slightly quieter than in Pentax.

I can see several reasons why not: the point of small Pentax bodies seems
quite pointless if you have to carry a rather bulky spotmeter as well; you
loose automatic functions while spot metering; no compensation for filters
and/or extension.

True enough. I remember how surprised I was when you mentioned earlier
that it had a metal chassis... I never suspected that. I've almost given
up hope that Pentax will come out with an AF camera that I like (they're
all way too noisy, and I'm not happy with the controls), but an LX with

The in-body spot meters are 3 degree.
Almost small area rather than spot.
Then hand-held meter is 1 degree.
There's a vast improvement available with separates.

Must depend on which lens you're using. It's about 2.5% of the area on the
MZ-S, and together with eg. a 300 mm lens this gives slightly less than 1
degree spot area (if I did my calculus correctly...). /Erik

Spot meters are over rated, unless you are truly anal retentive.
 However:
 A Pentax 1º spot meter.
