Just back from the film.
Terrific, best GP/Formula 1 film since "Grand Prix" in '66.

I was there the year Lord Alexander Hesketh brought the team to Watkins Glen
(1974). Even met all the big shots (quite by accident) at his party in the big
truck. The film brought back memories. :-)

2013-09-28 Thread Steve Cottrell
Years ago I was lucky enough to meet James Hunt - I was a film editor
about to work on a doc of the attempt to bring city-centre racing to
Birmingham (England). James was managing one of the drivers in the race
(formula F3000 - q.v.) and I went to the shoot to watch and hang out. It
pissed with rain and I ended up being Hunt's brolly-dolly as he
patrolled the starting grid! Can't remember much about it except he was
charming and 'a bit of a lad' ;-)

The race was a disaster and ended in a wet shunt. This is the only pic I
can find on the web!

The Hunt/Lord Hesketh relationship is well told here. Even after Hesketh had to
bail, he's seen again celbrating hsi "superstar's" success. There's a lot to
love in this film.

And Nicki Lauda was one of the all time greats.

The trailers are amazing, don't doubt the movie is too.

Hi Bill, I'm not going to review the movie, but my Times connection gets me
invites to many auto events. Brembo is a close connection as well. I did a
piece for the Times on ceramic brakes.
I'll have to have a look at what McLaren is doing here. Thanks for the tip.
I think this film surpasses Grand Prix by a substantial amount in terms of
cinematography . Mainly because so much more is possible today. A better story
as well, and an essentially factual one. But it probably won't get the
accolades. It's a different world.

Are you doing an article, Paul? It sounds like you got a 'Pro' invite.

I remember Lauda's accident, too, and the terrible scarring on his face
after. He still went on to establish his own airline.

I wonder how this will compare with the 1966 movie 'Grand Prix', which I
recall as being impressive for it's time, especially the cinematography. It
won three Academy Awards for technical items.

BTW, I still think you should do an updated article on McLaren Racing in
Livonia. They are now a three building campus, when everything else in
Detroit is shrinking.
