Heh. I'd forgotten about that one.

I think that makes a good theme. :-)

Re: PUG themes for 2008

2007-10-11 Thread Alastair Robertson
Hi Scott

here's the wikipedia list of "red shirts"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirt - I assume it is the penultimate
one you are referring to? Perhaps we could try fitting pictures to
the other definitions as well? I kinda like the cannon fodder theme.

Alastair

Redshirt (college sports)
Redshirt (character), a stock "cannon fodder" character in fiction,
particularly in Star Trek: The Original Series
Redshirts (military history), one of the followers of Giuseppe Garibaldi
Redshirts (military history), Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army
The Red Shirts, South African shack dwellers' movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo
Red Shirts, a paramilitary organization in Mexico in the 1930's
Kuilix, a Pend d'Oreilles woman whose name meant "Red Shirt" or "Red One"
Delphine Red Shirt, an Oglala Lakota Sioux writer
Red Shirt, South Dakota
Red Shirt (Factory), a post civil war Southern organization
Red Shirts (South Carolina), supporters of Wade Hampton in South
Carolina for the gubernatorial election of 1876
Khudai Khidmatgar, a non-violent movement of Pashtuns against the
British Empire in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan
Red Shirt School of Photography, a growing trend in the 1950s,
pioneered by National Geographic photographers, to have subjects wear
overly colourful clothes
Redshirt, the encryption scheme used in the Introversion Software
games Darwinia and Uplink

Thanks, Rick. I think a little overlap isn't necessarily bad. Unless
one had a model train set with real plants, it would awfully hard to
satisfy nature, landscape and macro with one photograph. But perhaps we
could turn them into two themes instead of three. Nature/landscapes and
macro/close up. These allow quite a lot of interpretation within the
same theme while not limiting participation due to a lack of specialty
lenses.

Same for fashion/glamour and portraits. I have a feeling, though, that
combining them into simply a portrait theme would probably leave us
without too much fashion and glamour. I like fashion and glamour.
Especially with long legs.

As for "Red shirt", I thought you would know about that one. Look it
up.

I guess we need a couple more themes. I'll dig some more. How does
aerial photography sound to everyone?

Seriously, Bill laid it out rather plainly during a previous discussion
of PUG themes, and I'm trying to abide:

I think the themes thus far adhere to that philosophy rather well,
allowing much more liberal interpretation than "flower" or "Halloween".

Scott,

As you say, there is a lot of overlap; too much to be
really stimulating, I think. Nature, Landscape,
Macro, Synchronicity all tend in the same direction.
Then there's "Red shirt"?!?!

Miscellaneous ideas:

Great idea! When I was packing to move last spring I discovered a 20
exposure roll of GAF 500 that I must have bought in the late '70s or
thereabouts. If I recall, it had a 1980 expiration date. Maybe it's

Filching with an "I" means stealing, or at least it did when I was
growing up. Actually, it meant a really, Really, petty theft, e.g.
"filching apples from ol' man so-and-so's orchard" ... kid's stuff. Sort
of in the same league with tipping over out-houses and puttin'
cherry-bombs in mailboxes.

Felching with an "E" has another meaning entirely.

Hey, gang. I think it's time to start discussing next year's PUG
themes. So toss 'em out. Be creative. Philosophize. Flame each

I've seen 'em around Shelley Lake in Raleigh, NC.

We're about 120 miles inland - figuring from the closest beach. I don't
know how big Shelley Lake is in square footage or whatever, but the
green-way path that runs around the lake is exactly 2 miles long.

In addition to the occasional cormorant, I've seen lots of Canadian
geese, various kinds of wild ducks, great egrets, great blue herons and
even a swan there.

RE: PUG themes for 2008

2007-06-20 Thread Minelli Flavio
I like many of the ones already suggested ("oops", especially).

Myself, I'd suggest a couple of "specially coloured" themes, simple ones
like:

red, yellow, blue, green

or more difficult ones as:

lavender, fuchsia, violet, orange, and so on. Perhaps one of each. I
don't know if it's been done already, though.

Ciao, Flavio

Hey, gang. I think it's time to start discussing next year's PUG
themes. So toss 'em out. Be creative. Philosophize. Flame each
other's stupid ideas. Whatever. I'll take a look at the thread in a
few days and we'll narrow it down a bit.

The PUG is supposed to be as inclusive a gallery as possible. This means
that themes should be doable with fairly basic equipment, and that the
subject shouldn't be exclusive to certain parts of the world.
My understanding is that cormorants are a seaside dwelling creature,
therefore out of reach of people who don't live near large bodies of
water...
