Yep - order cards from CAPE CADS - 1-800-848-7671 (maybe by now they have
a web address)
they are a variety of cards that have a window to insert your photo in.
THe outside boundaries
of the ones I have are 5 x 7 and the inside is 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 - allowing
you to slip 4 x 6 inch
prints in to the frame. Photo stores sell these for a lot but ordering
direct they are reasonable.
They can be framed easily as they work like a mat. THen you can keep
better control over
your image, too.

My Wife just showed me some of those from the Lilian Vernon catalog
yesterday. These were Christmas cards but they may have others. She
suggested we get them for Christmas next year. I suggested SHE be toe one
to go to the lab and get X00 copies of whatever photo she picked. She
changed the subject.

RE: Photo Greeting Cards

2001-12-09 Thread Malcolm Smith

Thanks Dave,

That's not a bad idea at all, sticking a photo on.

The one thing that I have learnt here is to try different methods so I
expect I'll try a bit of each and see what works for me. About time the
printer did something creative.

I too have family scattered about, hence the desire for something more
personal and no doubt my children will get in on the act (three under 7)!

I did something like this last year - I took a picture someone else had
shot of me, the wife and the little girl (about five months old then) and
just stuck in it a card with no caption. Sure, it's not the greatest
quality in the world, but it's nice when your little family is halfway
around the world from your relatives - they open the card and there's
a little picture of us waving at them.

Alternatively, you could print on A5 card and just fold it over. Any
reasonable printer would do, really. If you can double side it, very
good, but you can just write something on the inside, does the job too.

In my opinion - yes
I do these cards (Photographer's Edge) all the time. I use a 3 to 4 year old
Epson Stylus Photo and their 4" X 6" photopaper. I have my significant
images scanned to a Photo CD, use Photoshop 5.0 to size and color correct.
Not counting ink and scanning, my costs are under $1.50 per card.
I've seen images in these cards being sold for $6.00 each. You don't need
software as sophisticated/complex as Photoshop.

Take a look at Photographer's Edge on line.

I've simply bought nice card stock at an art supply and had 4X6's printed
up. Use Scotch spray mount to apply the photo to the card. Works nicely.

I would start with your local print shops - they should give you some paper samples
that you can print out on so that you can select the paper, and the cost of the
greeting cards is usually very reasonable locally.
