Hi Boris ...

Photographs are just as much about what the viewer sees and
feels as what the photographer's intention was, and his or
her feelings and vision.

I don't think I had the "Big Brother" concept in mind when I
made the shot. I just liked the contrasting expression
between the poster and the man sitting in front of it. Yes,
I recognized that there might be some symbolism there, but,
frankly, I don't have a lot of time to think about depths of
meaning when trying to grab a shot. I look more for
composition or some strong element that might make ~this~
snap a good one. Sometimes only later will the layers of
meaning manifest themselves, but then I'm looking at the
photograph as much as a viewer as as the photographer.

Tremendous shot, Shel!

The look on that man's face is haunting! Beautifully sharp, great exposure
(the background is all washed out, but the foreground is spot on!). I love
the composition: just cutting off the top of the head of the man in the ad
gives a real tension to the photo.

The juxtaposition between that man in the ad and the subject - the
differences between the two sets of eyes - amazing!!

See, I'd never think of cutting off the bottom of the subject's legs like
that, but it works tremendously well here - draws us to his face, and the ad
behind him.

I love this photo!

thanks,
frank

A while back Juan Buhler and I went out shooting in San
Francisco. Anyone heard from Juan in the last year or so?
Anyway, this was one of the shots I grabbed that day.

Nice composition Shel - works great for me. You should keep a diary about
your street shooting - might make a good book one day - oh yeah, with
illustrations :-)

Cheers,

It's a nice shot. I wonder if you could have pointed more to the left.
I find the street distracting, but I really don't know how bad the other
half would have been. The tonal range in the two faces nice however.
As a matter of fact, I like the range of tones in the entire image.

That's not Juan ... Juan was grabbing a slice of pizza at
the time the shot was taken. This was "just some guy" who
happened to be sitting there with an expression that seemed
to counterpoint the look of the poster guy.

Not knowing who Juan is of course, but I wondered if that was him on the
bench because of the backpack he is holding. It looks sort of like it might
be a padded camera backpack type. I thought he looked really comfortable
with the idea of being photographed, maybe too comfortable. He's doing a
very good job of expressing a softer, more relaxed image rather then the
hard, cold, and mean look on the poster guy. Very likely if he was your
partner for the day it wasn't hard to get him to comply. Everyone's a wanna
be detective here huh? LOL

I don't know ... he saw me photographing him, didn't
object. I think he was more ambivalent than anything else.
I wanted to catch a neutral expression to contrast with the
"harder" look of the advertising poster.
