RE: Vivitar Series I, 19-35.

2002-04-27 Thread David Chang-Sang

Jeff,

I've been eyeing this same lens for about 6 months now at least :)
I've heard it's very good for the money (the manual focus version being
better than the autofocus version apparently).
HUGE filter size though (I think it's 77 or 72) but other than that.. very
little vignetting from what I understand.

Dave

How good is this lens?

And, these two facts probably represent a cause-and-effect

I found it to be good, with the only major weakness being flare when the
sun directly hits the front element. Otherwise it is sharp and contrasty.

I had one for a shot while, but did not use it a whole lot. Here are a
couple sample shots taken with it:

I like this shot. If one ignores dilapidated walls behind, the rest can
easily pass of as something in an advanced lab as shown in movies :)

It's a cool building - the steam lift is 3 stories tall and the building is
entirely poured concrete - even the roof. The windows are quartz. A few
years ago the owners would let you just wander around the lift, but now its
part of a structured tourist walk-through.

This shot does show that the lens is pretty rectalinear and while flare can
be a problem, it did not suffer from the backlighting of the windows.

What would be a good price? New, used.

I have a Series I 28-105 that also flares, but I've learned to live with it
(using my left hand as a shield)

I had one for a shot while, but did not use it a whole lot. Here are a

Love the first shot.
I may on the hunt for one of these lenses.

Based on what I've seen online - Ebay - it usually goes for around $135.00
USD - but I'm not sure how much you could get it for if you hunted some used
stores in the area (Toronto)

Cheers,
Dave

I believe Henrys has one for $300 CDN.
That seems steep.
I'll check around.

Henrys always tends to inflate the prices on their
used items.

I bought mine new from Adorama for $155 (US) last year, sold it on ebay
for
 $112.50 last week.

Just found it on BH site for $149 new. I hate paying $20 for shipping, but
I may have it shipped to my brother in Milwaukee ($7 shipping). I'll see him
in 4 weeks.
