Re: DA 18-55 Version I vs. II

2008-04-24 Thread Thibouille
Mmm I'd be interested in exchanging or selling/buying my DA16-45 for
the Tamron 17-50/2.8.

However, I'm not too sure how those compared to each other.

There were a couple of reviews, that more or less confirmed that the new
II version was a much sharper lens corner to corner as well as in the
center. The difference even showed up in the web sized images.

 Hi all,

the 18-55 kit lens might lack some quality compared to other, much more
expensive lenses. But AFAIK it does perform surprisingly well for its price
or value (about $50 to $100?).

How is the difference to its current successor?

 = 18-55mm
 = f 1:3.5-1:5.6
 - lenses 12 - 11
 - groups 9 - 8
 = distance 0.25 m
 = fmin 22-38
 = filter 52mm
 = length 67.5mm
 = diameter 68mm
 - weight 225 g - 220 g

Apart from the different label with an extra red II I do not see any
outside difference. Specs are almost identical, mainly one lens and one group
less, thus less weight and probably less manufacturing cost.

Did they improve optical quality by omitting a lens? I guess it does improve
profit only. Are there any side-by-side comparisons?

Re: DA 18-55 Version I vs. II

2008-04-23 Thread Margus Männik
I could try it in January during Pentax Dubai Desert Adventure. They
said, the new version was designed to meet more precise sensors like
10.2 and 14.6MPix ones instead of old 6MPix ones. As you may know, older
one is rather feeble with K10D (i.e the lens resolution was lower than
sensor resolution), but works really fine with K100D. We used K20D
cameras with 18-55 II lenses for two days and the results are ok. Not as
good as with DA*'s I had with me, but ok. Compared to older DA18-55 the
resolution is clearly higher and it's geometry is also a bit better.

Interesting!

I was originally thinking that, if I can ever afford to upgrade to the
K20D, I'd just get the body only. However, if the 18-55 II is that much
better, it might be worth getting the kit and sell my old 18-55 with the
K10D. Since I'll probably never be able to afford the DA* 16-50, the
18-55 is my only option for an affordable wide zoom.

PJ, do you remember where you read the reviews you mentioned?

For affordable wide zooms, the 16-45/4 and Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 are
excellent options for much less than the 16-50DA*. Pentax offers more
than just the 16-50 and 18-55. I've owned both of those (16-45 when I
had my K100D, 17-70 with the K10D) and liked both a lot. The 17-70
also makes a nice 17mm f2.8 prime if you use the zoom lock (which is
how I normally used it).
