This message did not get through, hence I'm trying again:

Hi Dave (and all those who read/wrote about this ongoing disaster),

Yes, when you hope you can start over, you get hit again, so you're always
in a suspended/depressing state.
There are lots of structural engineers at work (and the authorities are
hiring all those available), but you cannot check all buildings in a few
days, so
someone gets back at home/work in buildings showing little/no damage, and
then the quake hits again and someone else is killed again. And then you

have to start evaluating everything as you did nothing before.
There are no big cities in the most-damaged area (although Modena, Bologna
and Ferrara are all within 30-40 kms from there), but there are countless
small towns/villages one after another, rich in historical (and usually not
so safe) buildings/churches.
However, the worst and most surprising thing is the number of industrial
sheds which collapsed (usually partially, but enough for killing workers and
stopping manufacturing) in one of the richest and more active areas in
Italy. They are mostly small companies, to which a destroyed building
usually means nothing left and out of business. Sure some seismic rules have
been eluded there...

Re: Earthquake (more)

2012-05-30 Thread Dario Bonazza

Hi Godfrey, thanks for your concern.
However, I'm not sure I'll make photos at all, as I live close enough to
feel the shakes very well (and have some cracks in walls/ceiling at home),
but no buildings are down and no displaced people are living in tents in my
area (60-70 kms from the badly-hit towns). I'm not sure I want to go there
to shoot, as I'm not enough in a photo-journalist mood to justify going
there purposedly, to report on those people's bad luck. Also, I currently
have a lot of work to do, enough to work at evenings/weekends. That also
depends on a difficult family situation, with sister suffering of a rare
disease (100% disabled) and aging parents to take some care of.
