Re: GESO: spring flowers etc (6)

2021-05-10 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks Mike. My naming of the Fly was a wild guess based on the notion that
this is the month of May and the thing just started showing up.

As far as the mushroom is concerned, yes a bit distressed and could have used
better lighting. I bought it at our farmer’s market a week earlier so it had
dried out in the meantime. And I think it also was distressed because all of
the rest of its brethren had been chosen for the saute pan and a warm swim in
an omelet/scrambled egg dish. By the time I got to doing my planned macro shots
I was losing patience, Meg was trying to read the Sunday paper and didn’t want
me dimming the lights or closing the shades, I didn’t have another table to
relocate to, so I just did a couple of quick shots and resolved to go back to
the market this coming Saturday…

I did a a long series outside of the bee on the flower. Most are essentially
identical; there was a breeze and I was trying to anticipate quite moments. At
some point the bee changed positions and is more sideways to the camera, maybe
a better “portrait” of the bee but I liked this pose.

Thanks all for your comments..

I think it would have benefited from better lighting, it seems to have
interesting shapes curves and crevices that are lost in the flat lighting.

Re: GESO: Spring Flowers

2013-08-22 Thread David Mann
Thanks for looking & commenting, Dan. It took me a few moments to get the
framing right as I had some issues with the background. It is a nice flower, I
don't think I've seen one with such strong stripes before. We should have some
more coming out soon. I had to replant one a week or two ago as a blackbird
had "gardened" its bulb into a gravel path then covered it with leaf litter,
and it happily started to sprout there.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks to everyone for their comments, you're too kind. I wasn't really

Re: GESO: Spring Flowers

2008-04-30 Thread John Francis

There's nothing wrong with cliches - there's a reason why many
people take the same kind of shots. For one thing it lets you
judge yourself (or your equipment) against a known standard,
without ending up with boring shots of brick walls and the like.

For example, here's one I took this afternoon for just such a
purpose (exactly what purpose is left as an exercise :-):

http://www.jfwaf.com/temp/SpringRose.jpg

(spring here in California has mostly got beyond daffodils)

Then, of course, there's the fact that the pics just look nice.
I prefer the tulip shots, in general, to the daffodils.

Re: GESO: Spring Flowers

2008-04-30 Thread Bob Sullivan
Thank for the comment Paul.
I included the yellow tulips just to be a bit different.

I know that these flower pictures are cliches, but I like them.
The tulips and daffodils remind me of a specific time of year with
cool weather and awakenings.
I learned a bit taking these pictures and putting them up.
I am not as flexible and nimble as I used to be (got to work on that).
Also, I should carry a black or green backdrop.
Some of my favorite tulip shots are with dark backgrounds.
Some of my less satisfactory shots suffer from the busy, brown backgrounds.
...And I remember one of the presenters at GFM suggesting carrying a background.
Regards, Bob S.

After working to put these pictures up, I recognize how cliche they are.

I like this one in particular:

It seems to make that leap from a pretty flower photo to something a
