Here are 31 photos from the dance event I went to this weekend. There were
two official photographers, neither one was me, so I didn't take a lot of

(midnight to 5AM) dance, which was dimly lit, mostly with color adjustable
 led bulbs.
One of the official photographers was using his flash at the main dance, so I
did shoot a bit then just to show him that he didn't actually need to use a
 flash.

Nice work from some tricky conditions, Larry!

Flash in a setup like that... I shudder to think what the other photographer's
results looked like.

Thanks Dan for the kind words.

Thanks Bruce. When shooting hypersaturated color I try to check the
histogram to make sure that no channel is clipping. Unfortunately no
auto exposure or auto toning seems to be able to handle it properly
and with no light in the other channels will over expose by a couple of
stops.

The other thing I'll do in these cases, which gives it the poster art
effect (particularly if it's a bit soft) is to really crank up the
clarity, possibly the vibrance, or saturation, and to drop the blacks.

It's funny how often an exposure that would be an awesome photo if it
wasn't a bit blurry can be come cool art by leaning so hard on some of
the other controls to the point that it no longer looks like a photo.

I hope the flash shooter got the point from you.

I haven't heard from him, or seen his photos, but there was a discussion
of it on the safety dance group on facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/safety.dance/permalink/979314825421632/

About a month ago, there was someone using a flash at a local dance, and
I discussed it with him in a bit too confrontational manner, which was
entirely counter productive. I was a bit gentler with Andy, showed him
a couple of things, particularly photos I took with my camera without
flash using an f/1.8 lens. I also suggested things he could try, such
as boosting his ISO so the camera needed less flash to make up for the
lack of light. In his favor, I did notice that he was pointing his
diffuser at the wall, and adjusting it when he went from landscape to
portrait. By Sunday night, I did notice the flash going off, but it
wasn't nearly so oppressive as it was on Friday.

I think he said his camera was a T-1 (?), and I know that Canons are
traditionally very weak in low light.

Nicely done, once again, Larry. You get amazing results in poor
lighting conditions.
