Don't ake my word for this, but my boss tells that the midle pin is a communication pin used to give the camera the information it needs to calculate how long the batteri will last. Larry, I think you just need to get a car power inverter so you can plug your regular charger into your car. I don't trust third-party chargers to do it right and not damage expensive batteries. Well, I used to sell Promaster universal chargers back at my camera shop job. You may want to check and see if any of their current chargers support the K-5 battery. They make good products, for the most part.
