And while it may add something to have it built into the camera, it's
not necessary for geotagging ... all you need is the image files, the
file of your GPS track from any GPS receiver, and one of several
programs (like gpicsync). I did it for my trip to Bulgaria last year
and it worked a treat ... until I changed the "where am i" settings in
the camera and skewed the timestamps on the photos.

Nikon is the only maker to offer on-camera GPS support on their
DSLR's. You can use either the recent Nikon GPS unit on supported
models, or any unit with standard NMEA serial output if your camera
has the 10-pin remote port and is new enough to support GPS
(introduced with the D2 series IIRC).

RE: RE: RE: Re: K 7 D FFN and GPS

2009-06-26 Thread David Savage
I know how to do it as I've done it myself from a data log file.

My D700 has GPS mentioned in the menu too, but you still need to attach an
external GPS receiver to the camera.

Which is the point I was making. None of the current generation has GPS
tracking & tagging functionality inbuilt.

Re: Re: K 7 D FFN and GPS

2009-06-26 Thread Thibouille
There is no DSLR with built-in GPS but addons make it possible.

Sony's solution doesn't work with the camera but with a syncing
software on the computer.
Nikon sells an addon which connects to the camera, the camera stores
directly the coordonates into the EXIF.
Canon I dunno probably like Nikon.

Note that a powerful separated logger is more flexible, although you
need to sync later on the computer.
Some logger will add voice memos and act as bluetooth GPS for
computers/smartphones by the way.

If you have the GPS data log file in a suitable format there is a Lightroom

2009-06-26 Thread Jens
Hello again
It seems there's no GPS tracking system in this camera :-)
So, I'll try to just use the Columbus V900, I ordered, as soon as I get it.
I allreaddy have a Hama i-GotU GPS tracking device. It works quite nicely,
actually, especially with the new @trip software. But it deosn't have a storing
function, which is crutial for longer trips. I have not yet forund out how to
actually geo-tag my pix.
