But NVidia's CUDA accelleration typically requires 256MB of dedicated

has shared VRAM (making it a poor choice for any memory-hungry

While Photoshop CS5 is definitely CUDA-enabled I've seen no indication

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA

Paul, CUDA is a technology that potentially allows to use one's GPU in
order to assist the CPU thereby significantly increasing combined
computational power. It is said that the nature of computations that
programs such as LightRoom or Photoshop perform lends itself easily to
such an enhancement.

As a matter of purely subjective evidence, my brother (IT consultant,
etc) indicated to me that I may expect as much as 5-10 *times* faster
processing of my images should new LR have CUDA integration.

I hope it sheds some light on this.

You're SOL on the iBook, LR3 requires an Intel-based Mac. Your PC's

probably too old, current system requirements are a P4 and 2GB of RAM

According to Adobe, not enough RAM.

I wonder if i could get by. I'm running CS2 on 768 of ram.??

I think they're recommending 2Gb as the minimum requirement for LR3.

Not sure what you're talking about, but Macbooks have Nividia graphics cards.

But NVidia's CUDA accelleration typically requires 256MB of dedicated
VRAM, which means a Windows machine or a Macbook Pro. The MacBook only
has shared VRAM (making it a poor choice for any memory-hungry
applications).

While Photoshop CS5 is definitely CUDA-enabled I've seen no indication
that ACR or Lightroom are.

Well, I thought I might, but it takes me to a page where I have to enter
email addresses for three people I want to share the news with. You
can't bag it, just generates an error You must enter at least one email
address.

So I enter one of my own alternate email addresses it says email has
been forwarded and nothing else.

Open the alternate email account, and there's a message from Bran
Everseeking with a link to download the Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 3
beta.

Clicking the link brings up a page that says:

There was a problem processing that URL.(Message not found).

That's all that's on the page. No links.

Clicking the download the beta download now links inside the email
message brings up the same error page.

I finally ended up just Googling Adobe Lightroom 3 beta and following
the link to Adobe I found there.

I'd definitely go to the forum and see if others have reported similar
issues. In the course of setting up to test it with the Epson R2400

catalog. No problems at all, and it seemed faster than when I did the
same thing with LR2.4.

LR3 is intentionally disabled from reading LR2 catalogs ... the
release note that came with it says that. This is to prevent people
from using the PUBLIC BETA for production work and damaging their
files. You are supposed to a) DUPLICATE the ORIGINAL files you are
going to TEST it with, and b) create and test with a NEW catalog.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom3/releasenotes.pdf

This is a test evaluation only release at present. If it is running
poorly, go to the adobe forums that were detailed on the page from
which you downloaded it and in the release notes do discuss it:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/labs/lightroom3/

Public Betas like this are not for everyone. Lots of stuff is far from
final and will not work correctly yet. And they're not for production
work. I've worked with it only a little bit so far, and thus far it
seems to work pretty well on the machine I'm testing it on (MacBook
2Ghz, 2G RAM).

On Sun, Nov 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote:
It won't import a 2.5 catalog, but I presume  they know that.

So it has to create a catalog from scratch. Twice now it  has stopped on
me, about 1/8-1/4 in. (Though at least the second try at  cataloging did pick
up from where it left off.) If it's not stopped, after the  initial good
start it turns s-l-o-w as molasses. I don't have the patience for  it --
because I mean really, really, really slow. Not the fast way 2.5  catalogues.
 (I
am not running anything strange, I am running Windows  XP.)

I went and looked at the download page and learned nada.

So  where do I send the bug report?

 Thanks.

 Murphy must be on vacation.

As soon as I upgrade Photoshop Elements (from 3 to 7!) Adobe come out
with Version 8.  And I was supposed to be upgrading Lightroom on my
new machine (from V1 to V2).  In fact I had it on my to do list for
this week, but never got round to it.

i guess I'll be going straight to V3

I do expect that it will be six months or more before the LR3 release
is finished. This is a Public Beta, not a Release Candidate.

Indeed. But I'm in a good position to participate in a Beta - I've got
everything (in LR1) on the old system, and I want to do some significant
rearrangement as part of the transition to a new version of LR. I was
part of the original Beta, too, and didn't have significant problems.

Installed, played with it some, first time using LR at all and it
frees my from my WB ignorance confines... if I needed any excuse to
buy and learn LR and do some post, this was it...

Forgot to add: As the LR3 develop module looks to be significantly
enhanced over the earlier versions, it makes sense to switch over to
it now, as I'm planning on revisiting some of my earlier conversions
now I understand Lightroom a little better; converting to LR2 now, and
switching to LR3 in six months, just seems like a lot of extra effort.
