RE: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?
I agree with Stan on the hard-copy v. digital issue. I edit a quarterly journal which is distributed to many countries, and while our printer accepts PDF format files for the publication, getting it into a bound format is expensive, and distribution even more so. We currently use two people to post the journal out, one in the USA for North American members and one in Germany for European members: this gives us the lowest postal rates possible. About 20% of our members have opted for a PDF-only version, which is much easier (and cost-less), which they download from our web site. I think Stan's come up with a great idea, and I'd certainly participate (if I could find anything halfway decent to submit!). So, to get to your option of a gallery of PDF versions of contributors images, the contributors or someone else would need to do the “printing.” Which is a bit different from submitting a file and letting Master Printer Mark do his magic to bring out the best image on paper the he could achieve. Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?
Stan assumes correctly - I really am living on a shoestring...part of one even, but do get some income from my smugmug site, and income from my calendar sales, and a couple of books on lulu and cafepress sales that help a lot.. I sell downloads of small jpgs for personal use from smugmug at a low price and high res files for editorial use - (some exceptions but only with my permission ) and there are others on the list that are even more actively gathering funds for their work in exhibits and in print media.. so no, I would not like the download option for the online PDML annual. Of course the smugmug site is like a stock photo agency, in a way, it is public and everyone can view the photos in a a variety of sizes as much as they like and I hope they do :-) ann On 1/17/2019 11:01 AM, Stanley Halpin wrote: Alan, a couple of thoughts… snipped a bit to get to the point... Feel free to undertake the challenge. I haven't offered to do it because it's beyond my level of competency. If someone else wants to take on the project, I'll contribute images and for certain I will buy copies of any resulting book. But it's not something I feel comfortable I could do without EFFING it up. On 1/15/2019 14:18:36, Alan C wrote: Not a bad idea but I think most PDMLers like the idea of a coffee table book.
