RE: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-18 Thread jcoyle
I agree with Stan on the hard-copy v. digital issue. I edit a quarterly
journal which is distributed to many countries, and while our printer accepts
PDF format files for the publication, getting it into a bound format is
expensive, and distribution even more so. We currently use two people to post
the journal out, one in the USA for North American members and one in Germany
for European members: this gives us the lowest postal rates possible.
About 20% of our members have opted for a PDF-only version, which is much
easier (and cost-less), which they download from our web site.

I think Stan's come up with a great idea, and I'd certainly participate (if I
could find anything halfway decent to submit!).

Alan, a couple of thoughts…

First, going from a handful of digits to an image on paper is non-trivial.
Whether it is real paper or virtual paper (e.g., pdf). That is one big reason
why I did not even think twice about trying to step in for Mark - he is a
master printer, I am not. So, to get to your option of a gallery of PDF
versions of contributors images, the contributors or someone else would need to
do the “printing.” Which is a bit different from submitting a file and letting
Master Printer Mark do his magic to bring out the best image on paper the he
could achieve.

I can, on the other hand, conveniently store and make accessible the digital
form for viewing on your phone, tablet, or desktop. RAW or jpeg, full size or
bare minimum size, makes no difference. When a viewer clicks on a thumbnail,
the Zenfolio software creates a screen version in the default size.

It is a simple virtual toggle switch for me to say whether the original file
can be downloaded. My assumption was that PDML contributors to such a gallery
would prefer not to have the download option, but it really makes no difference
to me. Some, like Ann, derive some income from their images and I assume would
not want the digital file accessible.

I am open for additional comments…

Stan assumes correctly - I really am living on a shoestring...part of
one even, but do get some income from  my smugmug site, and income from
my calendar sales, and a couple of books on lulu and cafepress sales
that help a lot.. I sell downloads of small jpgs for personal use from
smugmug at a low price  and high res files for editorial use - (some
exceptions but only with my permission )  and there are others on the
list that are even more actively gathering funds for their work in
exhibits and in print media..   so no, I would not like the download
option for the online PDML annual.   Of course the smugmug site is
like a stock photo agency, in a way, it is public and everyone can view
the photos in a a variety of sizes as much as they like and I hope they
do :-)

If this seems like a reasonable/useful option, then the way forward would
 be:
A - comment on the proposed parameters
B - I don’t see a way for others to directly upload. Send me up to 5
images that you would like to have included. Let me know Image Title and
Caption (caption = your name or email or other identifier.) I will load
them to the site, untouched, no editing, you submit what you want
 displayed.

I leave town for 6 weeks on 25 February, so 20 February would be a
 reasonable first deadline.

Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-15 Thread Alan C

Another suggestion:

Perhaps we could convince Brian to host a "Super PUG". We could all
contribute (say) 3 images from 2018 albeit at slightly higher
resolutions. They could then be presented in the usual PUG format &
accessed by PDMLers in their own countries where they could arrange to
have photobooks printed or even do it themselves. The Quotations for
2018 have already been posted. A nominal charge to cover expenses could
be collected up front with the images.

What do you think?

Access limited, password protected. No real need for this, but
possible in case anyone is nervous about putting they best stuff out
there on the web. I could also leave the Gallery open and password
protect access to individual images at the owner's request.

No Expiration date for the Gallery.

Downloading not allowed.

Max viewing size Zenfolio’s XXLarge = 1550x960

Titles etc Not searchable

Metadata viewable?

Show Number of Visitors to the Gallery?

Do Not allow viewers to order prints (again, I can adjust this
or any of the other parameters image by image if so requested by the
contributor.)

Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-15 Thread John

Feel free to undertake the challenge.

I haven't offered to do it because it's beyond my level of competency. If
someone else wants to take on the project, I'll contribute images and for
certain I will buy copies of any resulting book.

But it's not something I feel comfortable I could do without EFFING it up.
