Somewhere up-thread someone suggested creating a PDML group on facebook.

I was commenting I wouldn't see such a group if it was created on
facebook because I don't use facebook.

Usenet is also pretty much *DEAD*. The discussion groups have all been
long ago over-run by TROLLS. There's really no chance of discussing
anything there.

I was just goofing when I suggested it. 

Facebook is fine, but I don't have an account, so I wouldn't see a PDML
group there. Hopefully the mail list will continue to suffice.

Re: PDML - PDFG ?

2023-01-11 Thread John Sessoms

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

A lot of colleges & universities provided students with "news" accounts.

See also: Eternal September

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Eternal%20September

I got a job with a computer company in November 1994 and they introduced
me to the internet. Before that I had used dial-up message boards (BBS
systems) and Usenet was very similar. Nowadays that function is kind of
served by BLOG comments (those blogs that still allow comments).

Many ISPs did away with their "news" servers in the mid-2000s. Time
Warner did in 2006. Losing those discussion groups was kind of what led
me to PDML.

But Usenet is mostly dead now, although there is still a good binaries
group where fans will post Dr Who episodes.

PS: Fun Fact - Usenet was originally invented by a couple of CS grad
students at Duke University in Durham, NC where I grew up ... so they
could trade messages with CS grad students over at UNC in Chapel Hill.

I took no offense, besides in this group “old and now somewhat obscure”
probably comes off as a glowing recommendation.

And has suffered from the same prevalence of spam that took down usenet.
Coincidentally, the one other email list that I frequent is a group of friends
that I met on a usenet group, which also had some of the best writers I know.

I was on Usenet starting in 1984 when I was working at JPL/NASA. The modern
hypertext-based internet and "world wide web" dates from around 1993 when the
first web browsers started to appear. That's about when I stopped looking at
Usenet and other archaic-isms from the 1980s. Email lists became popular a
little earlier than the web browsers, and many of the groups I still
participate in are still on email services that were first defined in 1990 and
1991.

Doug,

You have my vote of confidence and support for the fine job you've been doing
with PDML. And my thanks as well. :)

That said: The PDML server software is a bit primitive by modern standards.
have you ever considered going to a modern mail server provider to enable users
with much more modern systems to utilize rich text email as well as photo
embedding into emails?

I have been pleased with the performance of groups.io and their mail server
services. Modern email facilities and seamless use for photo distribution
without needing links and such… It's worth a thought about migrating PDML to
something like that, if not them specifically.

Hi Cotty,

groups.io is email based … the groups.io server simply maintains the list of
people to distribute the emails to and transmits the emails you send to the
list, plus whatever attachments etc, you want to put in your emails. An
administrator simply manages the list (which is also able to have user controls
for adding and removing an address and all that), the rest of it is pretty
automated and driven by the users' individual email hosts and apps.

When I login to my groups.io account, I can see all the groups I'm subscribed
to, review posts to any of the groups, look for current topics in all the
groups, see my activity across all the groups, etc. I normally don't login to
the server very often at all: posts to any of my groups are sent to me as email
and I respond to them as email replies, attaching whatever photos or links I
want to distribute to the group.

It's simple and easy. I helped move my "workshop reunion" group communications
to it several years ago when the Yahoo groups went away… (that's the group of
photographers who participated in the exhibition and photo book classes that i
attended and participated in a decade ago). There have been zero complaints.

I'll have to look at that one, mike. Forums pose a different kind of
conversation than email lists, and a different cost/complexity structure in
setup and management; it might also be useful and appropriate for various of my
groups. Thanks!

Personally, I haven't maintained a personal, "portfolio" website or web server
in a decade or so. I have found sufficient utility in using Flickr.com as
master image hosting web server and have found my small participation in a
couple of groups there has been 100% positive. If I did want to maintain my own
portfolio website again, I'd probably go with Square Space rather than writing
my site by hand the way I did last time. The technology has progressed since
then… ;)

Forums are not email based and there is usually a free image server associated

Nor me. I like the fact that there is very little white noise here, even
though thread drift is almost a requisite. Without accepting that I am a
victim of confirmation bias, it's no coincidence that the only other online
forum that I frequent is a private, invitation only one.

Not from me. I don't (and won't) do facebook - I just find far too annoying.

But there again I'm not doing a lot of Pentax stuff nowadays, either.
Probably the most interesting thing I'll do here is post a 'for sale'
list - I'm working up to selling my A* and FA* lenses (A* 300/2.8,
FA* 80-200/2.8 & 250-600/5.6) once I've worked out just how much
(or how little) they should go for.

I'm holding on to the DA* zooms for a while (16-50, 50-135, 60-250),
and the K-5 still works just fine, but quite honestly I'll probably
rarely if ever use them again.

Re: PDML - PDFG ?

2023-01-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Personally, I detest FB. I only have an account there because there is a
contingent of old friends who have seemingly lost the ability to communicate
any other way ( including answering the telephone without messaging them on FB
first...!). Ugh. I'm there, in essence, because I value my old friends more
than I despise the medium of communications.

Also, FB terms of service essentially give them 100% rights to use any
photographs you post on their service any way they like in perpetuity with no
compensation to photographers. I only post photos that I consider valueless
there as a consequence.

I've not found any motivation to participate in any of the photo groups I've
tried there. There seems to be little real conversation of any depth in them.

If the goal of a proposed FB group is to allow modern formatted text and photo
sharing features in PDML communications, I would suggest moving the PDML to a
modern list server with groups.io instead. I've helped move three other photo
groups to this service and it's been 100% successful, including one that
started on FB and left due to the terms of service issues.

I used to post event images to facebook, but they made some changes and if
anything I’ll post a link.

I use it out of necessity, but hate it with a luke warm passion. It regularly
makes me miss livejournal before it was bought by the Russians.
